Hello fellow decorators! I need your help please? I use gum-tex in my fondant to make gumpaste but I have issues with keeping it soft enough to roll, cut, then shape. I tried putting less sugar into the fondant thinking it was just too dry, but then it's too soft and won't hold it's shape or it gets too sticky! Please help! Thank you in advance :o)

Hi, I've never used gum-tex. I usually use the Wilton ready make gumpaste and mix it with fondant. This gives me more time to work with it before it hardens. I would assume that if you used less gum-tex in the fondant that it would work the same way.
I use the satin ice gumpaste too, I've never tried mixing it with fondant (yet!) but I know I have to work fast or keep it in a zip lock bag right beside while I work, and then I pull it out of the bag as I need it. Kind of a pain but it's the only thing that's worked for me.
Satin ice is the best. I do not like any type of wilton fondant or gumpaste. you have to work quickly with all of them but satin ice is more forgiving and if you maybe add a little shortening it will help with cracking.
Where do you purchase your Satin Ice?

I love Satin Ice Gumpaste, it's cheaper than Wilton too! If I need it to not dry out as fast, I too mix it with fondant. Maybe you could try taking your fondant that you've turned into gumpaste already, and mix it 50/50 with regular fondant. That might give you the results you're looking for :)
Thank you all for your help! I will have to try mixing the ready made gumpaste with my fondant and see if this helps :o) I make my own fondant, but IF I could afford Satin Ice I definitely would buy it! Do any of you mix modeling chocolate with your fondant? I'm not sure if this is a rumor or not that this can help get a smooth and more pliable result??
http://www.sugarcraft.com/ It costs about $25 with shipping, but is much cheaper than the $8-$9 per pound that it costs for Wilton at my local Walmart. :)
I have a fool proof recipe for gumpaste... like the others... Satin Ice!!!! I usually order through Global Sugar Arts because they run specials all the time but you can get it almost any online cake suppliers.
As for modeling chocolate... try these links for recipes... LOVE using it. but be sure you get a good quality chocolate that is fresh. I made some with ghiridelli white chips and it was nasty tasting! I love merkens brand chocolate and GSA has a great sale on it right now!!!
