Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi all,

Gmorning to you!! And happy Monday!!

I had a question - i have a client who would like buttercream roses on top of their cake - like a bouquet!!  For the life of me i cannot do a buttercream rose as shown by WILTON.  I dont know if it has to do with me being left handed and therefore not getting the slant right!!  But i can't just do them :(

So what should I do???  I found this option as an alternate...what are your thoughts??

Or if anyone has a nice, simple way of doing bc roses that would be really useful....

Thanks so much!

Meera, I've never been satisfied with my BC roses either.  I refuse to do them.  There are so many more creative ways to decorate than using the standard roses.

Deah do you know of any other alternative routes??

Fondant ribbon roses are easy

Try searching a video for buttercream roses on YouTube.

Meera,

The Wilton method that you have a hard time with is it for the ribbon roses?  I had a bit of a hard time with those too. The trick of those is to make sure you are turning flower nail instead of trying to turn your hand/bag.  I find the regular roses easier to do.  Not that I'm crazy about either.  Have you tried watching utube videos like this one--http://www.chow.com/food-news/55128/how-to-make-a-buttercream-rose/

Hey Meera

There is a good tutorial on how to make a icing rose on YouTube by: HeavensBaker

It is very good. Check it out

Others also suggest using a Hershey's kiss as the center of the rose, then place the petals on the kiss.  I can see where having a firm base would make it shape up better.

Thanks ladies for all those tips, I will be sure to try it again!! wish me luck!! hee hee...

I have also used either fondant or gum paste as the cone center. That way the butter cream doesn't 'cave' in.
