What would you charge?
So,I am in no way a professional cake decorator. I love doing it as a hobby and hope someday I may be able to make some money doing. But I am curious what others might charge if they had made my cake. So, just for fun I would appreciate knowing what you would have charged for my MULAN cake that I made for my kids' school play cast party. It consisted of:
14 inch round
10 inch round
6 inch round
All covered in Fondant
Hand painted details
Fondant figures, etc
Because it was just for the school, I used boxed cake mixes. I think the whole cake cost me between $50 and $60 to make.

Most people take their cost times 3, so that cake would have been between $150 and $180. Keep in mind that's about the same size as a standard wedding cake, and handmade toppers are always extra. Nice work!

That's it?!!! Just $180? LOL!! I was hoping for like $300 or more. Especially if it was a wedding cake. For the hours it took to make, I would not do very well selling it. But, what would YOU charge if you made it. Would you just multiply times 3? Or do you feel your time and work is worth more?

I charge by the serving. $3.75 per serving for a fondant cake. Cheaper for a butter cream cake.

Serves 116 x $3.75 = $435
Fondant 116 x $1.25 = $145
Figurines $50
Flowers & plaque $50
Total $680

Don't forget your time also for the hand painting. That takes time and your time is valuable.

I would have no trouble charging $400-$500 for something like this. Since I am NOT a pro, but a hobby baker, couldn't charge as Laney has quoted above. Heck, I did a 2 tier, !2' & 10", just fondant & ribbon this past wknd, and I charged $250. With the detail on this cake, DON'T under sell yourself.

I must admit our area ranges $3.25-5.25 per slice + $1-2.50 for fondant. I know some regions charge less. A few years ago I attended a day of sharing & Bronwen Weber said she was getting three something per slice. That's crazy! But, that is what her market will bare. Charleston is expensive for cake!

That's nothing, Maggie Austin Cakes gets $8.00 a slice. Now to me, that is over the top. I think the Cake Boss also gets something like that a slice. No wonder they can blow 'em up, shoot fireworks out of them and everything else!

It's the market really. Where I live, for a birthday cake, nobody would pay over $100. I heard someone scoffed at a friend who asked $400 for a 5-tier wedding cake - so there you go. It's what the market will bear.

Ken, what I would do, is call all over the place in your area and give them the exact specifics of what your cake is, (you don't have to mention that it is your cake, you are just calling to get prices) and then ask what they charge. Every area is different. The West Coast and the East Coast are always going to be much higher than say the Midwest. Then you can get an average, and decide for yourself! =O)
