Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi there,

I have made quite a few topsy turvy cakes, but would like to try something a bit different;

My daughter is turning 12 soon and I would like to try a topsy-turvy cake, that instead of each tier being crooked and "off set", I would like to place each tier the same way, so with each tier the cake leans more and more to the same side, like the leaning tower of pisa!

I cannot find any pictures on the internet of the type of cake I mean, but does anyone know what I mean, and how I could do this?? It doesn't not need to be very big, I was thinking a 7", 6" and 4" with maybe a muffin sized cake on top. It also will not need to travel anywhere as the party is at home!

I was thinking of a curved piece of dowelling through the centre or something...

I have an idea but it may not be correct.  Since no one else offered any suggestions as of yet, here's mine.

Have your cakes all the same diameter first, I think it would be the easiest way.  Then carve it to the way you want it to make it look like the leaning tower of pissa.  And yes, I would use a large cupcake for the top as you said.  If you use the topsy turvy way of doing it, the diameter will be different and I don't think you will have the desire leaning affect as the tower, my opinion only.

Another thought that might even be easier than my first thought:

I'm thinking the same diameter cake from bottom up until the cupcake would be the easiest.  Perhaps just a slight cut or slight leaning for the carving on the bottom layer might do it as you pile the layers up.  And I would make darn sure you use dowels but I don't think it will require to be curved.  You might even have to use your cardboard cake plates between each layer directly for more stability.

Attached is a picture, I hope.

Hopefully now more people on the site will give you ideas.

Good luck and I hope you place a picture of your final project.

I've always wondered this, too - like a nightmare before Christmas shaped cake.  I can;t wait to see what you come up with.  Takes pics as you go along so we can all learn from you.

Thanks so much ladies. Probably won't be starting this until a week before, I am so snowed under with cakes! I will definately take that on board though and will keep you updated with pics!

i took a class at craftsy.com from david raskell and he taught the construction of the topsy turvy cake that was sooo wonderful!!! told you everything you need to know on the structure that has the cake leanning way over. worth every penny
