Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I own a small retail bakery in Texas, and I am having a hard time with finding the best mode of order taking..is it good ol' paper or computer. I need some suggestions. I am trying to cut down on errors and missing paperwork. We are really organized but we are doing about 100 custom orders a week and it is just human error. Do any of you take orders on a computer. If so, what cake program would you suggest.

Thank You,

Angie

Have you looked at "CakeBoss" computer program.  It was really for a home business but I'm thinking it could work for your needs as well.

Yes, its an excellent software... I have this program. This program not have stock yet... but you can order your recipes, ingredients and materials and when you take an order you can take the cost too.... I love it.

I love good ol paper,, i draw out each cake order with flavors an then designs,, i color it quickly while the customer is in front of me,, i get all info on the paper, plus tape any swatches or pics she brought in to it.. now you could scan this on the computer, but remember if you have some sort of goofy act of god, and the computer is down for the count,, you cannot get the order up.. i thumb tack my orders in a row on a cork board on a wall,, out going for the week,, form left to right, i put up tues, wed, thurs, fri, sat and then i  tack up other orders next to the cork board to the right that go out in the future,, i tack up also orders to the left of it, for the unpcoming week,,, im visual so i need to see them at all times.. i also have a cover sheet for the weddings,, i put the cake sketch , the contract, the cancellation and rules sheet that they signed all stapled together,, then i put a neon cover sheet over the pack,, then write the date of the event on it really big, like NOV 19th also is written in the left hand bottom corner, DEP Paid, also i write,, any details that i need to make for it early,, like, fondant bow, fondant flowers,, etc,,, so that i can keep an eye on them all, and have time to make all details,, i would think a computer would not be able to remind me of these things,, then you can always refer to the paperwork when they come in,, and write on it,, , but you can always scan it,, to always have another copy so that if a fire happens god forbid,, you will have another copy somewhere besides the wall,, but make sure you can pull it up from another computer if that suffers damage,, sorry if this is not making sense.. but hope it does.. Sweet Regards
If you have Adobe Acrobat Pro, or access to it, you can create your own forms, then fill them out on the computer and print them later if you need a paper copy. This works great for me because in addition to cakes, I also do party favors and dessert tables and could not find premade order forms that had everything I needed. You can fill out an order form very quickly by tabbing through the fields.
