Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi,

I'm interested in making a smash cake (basically a chocolate pinata - a cake that is hollow chocolate filled with candies inside. Any ideas on how I can make this?

Thanks!!!

I saw on Cake Boss where they used those plastic clamshell take-out containers, pour chocolate in them, made sure to get all the sides, pour out any excess and then put in the refrigerator. Once hardened, they cut away the plastic and had a cute little chocolate box.
You can use any mold you want really... just allow the two halves to set up firm and then stuff candy in one of the 1/2's and adhere the sides together.

Thanks Eileen. I've made a solid 3D shoe before. It was easy to stick the 2 solid parts together to make the 3D shoes. But I've tried making a hollow 3D shoe and had a lot of trouble fitting the 2 hollow chocolate parts together. Any suggestions? Thanks.

That's a great idea Jeanne! Thanks! Any suggestions on how to best adhere the 2 hollow sides together?

You can run a hot knife over the edge to melt the chocolate and stick them together, or you can pipe a small line of melted chocolate along the seam. When it dries you just scrape off the excess with a knife and your seam will go away.

Thanks Jeanne. I've tried this before - I found it very hard using the hot knife to adhere the 2 hollow parts. LOL Maybe it's just practice makes perfect? Thanks for your reply!

The thing with the knife is that it sets quickly while you're still busy with the rest. Rather take a big metal roasting pan and warm it up, and rub the edge of the chocolate on it. Melts the whole edge simmultanious.
