Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I'm looking for interesting methods, themes, items, papers, etc to cover cake boards.  Does anyone want to share their ideas?

For large boards (like the guitar cakes I do), I use those inexpensive single-color plastic tablecloths. They don't show grease stains from the buttercream and they come in all kinds of colors.
good idea!!! you can get a lot of uses out of one i'm sure. and they have them at the dollar store. i'll have to do that. thanks for the idea.

That is a great idea. I sometimes cover my board with a coordinating paper and then cover that with clear plastic wrap but this is easily torn when the cake is cut. I have recently tried using cellophane wrap which worked out pretty well.
The best is I get them on clearance at Wal-Mart after holidays - after Valentine's they had the red and pink ones for $.50! After Easter they had light green, yellow, and orange for $.75!
I use the heavy glossy wrapping paper - silver and gold (after Christmas sales!!) The foil type keeps the grease stains away. I recently have been using the white-ish Wilton board cover. It's super thin but not too fragile. It's by far my favorite to work with. But sometimes you just got to have that POP on the board. :) I have been wondering if you couldn't get the floral foil in sheets cheaper than you can by the roll? The cake supply store I frequent sells it by the roll but I don't make enough cakes to justify a huge amount of one color.
I use the floral Foil,, if you have a buisness sales tax license you can get it wholesale at a few different places,,, There are a few places here in Mich that sell the rolls pretty cheap too,, Hope this helps
I use foil specifically for cakes.
Alot of cake supply places sell the florist foils and I do not think they are safe... when you cut your cake sometimes the color of the foil stays on the cakes and I can not believe that it can be good. I use contact paper when I need to cover a board. I always use the cake drums for my base since they are so sturdy... unless I am using my cake stackers system.. then I only need the cardboard circles under the cake itself and they do not show. I like to buy the wax coated cake circles and squares but can not always find them. I do not remember where I got them last and am almost out of them. The last ones I ordered are not coated.
I thougth about this, but I thougth they could tear when u cut the cake. I was worried about ppl getting pieces of plastic in teir cakes. I put all my cakes on cake circles cut to size first, but i still thougth it might get cut.

Well, I am just a hobby baker but I use the freezer paper with the wax side next to the cake so its "grease-proof".
I use the fancy foils, but some people use even wraping paper and cover it with
contact paper. I never done this..
Vinyl table cloth isn't food safe... contact paper isn't technically food safe either. They aren't meant to be held against foods for any length of time. I use cake drums covered in fondant since it is 100% food safe. You can pretty it up by embossing it or cutting shapes out of it and filling it in with another color fondant... finish it off with a coordinating ribbon and you have a very professional finish. It takes minutes to cover a board in fondant, and even under a BC finished cake it looks great.
