Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So, I gotta know.  I posted this question on my blog because I am really torn.  What are people's opinions on cupcakes at weddings?

I would love to see a pic!  I am trying to warm up to the idea of wedding cupcakes.

I have pics of the tree... its actually the first cake sculpture I ever did, and one of the first wedding cakes... so keep that in mind :)

That is so cool JJ Becker!  A very unique idea.  You must be amazing now if that was one of your first cakes!
I do alright, Kathryn P, but I really like your idea of making the inside of the cake look cool.  I didn't realize that was your cake till now, but I've been talking about it.
Thanks!
Dawn, it was less expensive for my daughter by far.  So there is one for you.   It would also depend what type of person is going to be making the cupcakes with the type of decorations that the bride wants.  I don't believe everyone charges the same price.

Where are cupcakes cheaper?  Every decorator I know, myself included, charges MORE for cupcakes than cake.  Cupcakes take much longer to fill liners than a cake pan of the same  number of servings (my time is worth $$).  Cupcakes take much longer to decorate.  Again, my time is worth $$.  And those liners are more expensive collectively than cake boards.

In my world, the bride chooses cupcakes because she wants that look - not because they are cheaper.

I charge less for cup cakes cuz I don't make the cup cakes, i got a guy does nothing but cup cakes and believe me, scooping and baking included, he can fill orders faster than I can with big cakes Now, if they want a custom deco or a flower or something on each cup cake you're talking pricier.

Stampinsher - no one charges the same price even for cakes, or rarely.  But most of us agree that cupcakes take much longer to fill than a cake pan.  You can fill a 12" round in literally a second or two.  A 12" double layer cake feeds about 56+/- people.  It would take me about 20-25 minutes to fill that many cupcake liners because I put exactly 50 ml into each liner, no more, no less.  And to do this, I have to not only measure and level the scoop, I have to scrape the outside of the measuring scoop clean back into the batter bowl, then thoroughly scrape the measuring cup clean into the liner.  My cupcakes are even and consistent - the ice cream scoop method is simply calling it "good enough."  I don't feel comfortable with that.  I then have to decorate each and every cupcake.  The last cupcake wedding I did had 150 cupcakes - that was a lot of precise measuring.  Then I had to make 150 chocolate butterflies.  A cake to feed 150 would not have had nearly that many butterflies - so again less labor, less materials equals less cost to the customer.

People who aren't charging more for this are losing money.  Now, cupcakes are definitely the way to go for a DIY wedding and icing a cake smoothly is out of the question.  Cupcakes can be quite elegant if care is taken when icing and displaying.

JJ - your tree rocks!!

JJ,

I understand that just like I said before, there are some people who really do charge less depending what the bride wants and their budget including design.

Your tree is very cool looking!
