What  about a simple/elegant cake like this, but obviously not "wedding-y" words.

YIKES, hope that link works. If not. All I did was google 'wedding cake with words pictures" and a whole bunch comes up you can look at.

What if you had him at the top of a ladder and on the top maybe things to represent why he did it: family, money or things he enjoys doing. Going up the sides you could put exam papers, clock (long hours), etc. It may be too much but just a thought. Good luck!

Well, if its a graduation, you could always do a grad cap cake.  Here's a link to one I've done before to give you an idea.

I'm not sure what other direction to go.  I know that some people do a "roadmap to success" poster that is like a map that has little cartoon pictures of things that have happened along the grad's way to graduating.  I uploaded an example here:
