Does anyone have a delicious recipie for a key lime cake from scratch they would like to share? All the ones I have seen on-line are from a box. Thanks for sharing

Leah, the ONLY one I tried from scratch was Paula Deen's. I don't know what I done wrong but it was awful, so awful I threw it in the trash & made one from a lemon cake mix. It was for my sister's birthday & she loved it, but again it was box, sorry. Back to the PD recipe, it was dry & wanted to fall apart in my hands. I'll GLADLY send you the recipe & you can try it or tweak it. I was so happy when it came out of the oven, it was a beautiful white, not green....I thought, this cake would be perfect for a wedding cake (especially if the bride wanted one with a exotic flavor, but still white). I guess i should look it over again, maybe I could figure out what I done wrong (if it was me--lol).

Thank-you Tara. Where I am from we do not have real key limes, just lime juice, so you think I could substitute the flavors. I read that a traditional Key Lime Cake should not be green, I don't know how much truth is too that, but to me it's what the individual like. Have you tried the wilton key lime icing recipie?, that was the icing I was going for with the Key Lime Cake. I never tried a Key Lime Cake, this was going to be my tester, what flavors does it resembles? Thanks for your comments and recipie.

No I haven't tried the Wilton Key Lime icing. I used a cream cheese based frosting & added lime to it. Limes are alot like lemons, VERY tangy. I would think that a cake from scratch without jello or food coloring would be white also. The lime juice shouldn't turn it green. If all you have available is juice, just make sure it a good quality. They do make a higher quality even here (Florida, USA) that doesn't taste as fake as some do. I'm told there is a big taste difference between key limes & regular limes. That wouldn't stop be from trying it even if all I had was regular limes or just juice. Good Luck.

Ha Ha I just looked to see where you are....NC doesn't have Key Limes??? LOL. Have fun with the cake, now I'm wanting to try my hand at making another one.
I know right, I could not tell you what a genuine keylime looks like living in N.C ): please let me know how it turns out and I will do the same. I have this basic recipie that I use for my decorative cakes, since you told me the flavors I may try to do something with that. I did see the P.D recipie on recipezaar and one of the pics I saw the cake look really good and moist. Check it out if you have not already. www.recipezzar.com and do a search on keylime cake and you should see it. The reviews are decent, so definitely try again and keep me posted.

Leah, I'm in NC also and sometimes I find key limes at Wal-Mart of all places. If you can't (or don't want to) find the actual limes there is a really good key lime juice you can purchase - also at Wal-Mart. I've found it on the aisle with the mixers and also with the juices.

As far as the color of the cake, that is up to you. Sometimes perception adds to the flavor.
Thank-you soo much, when I went to wal-mart I did not see the actual key lime in the fruit section, but I did not think to check the juice section. I ended up buying some 100% lime juice. Thanks good looking out :)

Denay, I did see some just a few weeks ago at wal-mart, I guess they were out when I was looking for it. I had no idea that key limes are so tiny, you would definitely have to have some juice, cause I don't think the little key limes will give you enough or you would have to use the whole bag. Thank you for the site and the info :)

I tried the Paula Deen scratch key lime cake and it turned out really good. The first time at making it I had the bottled key lime juice and regular lime zest and it still turned out - everyone went crazy over it at my office. The 12" double layer cake only lasted a couple of hours and we only have 13 employees. The second time that I made it I doubled the recipe and I would not recommend doubling as it didn't turn out quite as good as the first time- it turned out but not the same moistness as the first.
