Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am making 8 inch cakes for my Daughters wedding shower. I was thinking of putting a cake in the center of each table, I would love to put flowers in the center of the cake. These will be used as the center pieces. Is this possible and how can I do it without the flowers touching the cake? Also where can I find pictures of this being done? Thank You...HELP I am new to baking..

Nineteen years, nine months ago to this date, was my wedding. How funny I would see this posting! My Mom and Auntie made our cake with real flowers (Orchids flown in from Hawaii) on it and our picture (my husband and I). I've attached the picture for you to see. So I don't see why you just can't have flowers on the cake itself. Just inspect them closely and clean them carefully.
The attached picture is a picture of my picture that I just took for this email. I hope that made sense?

be sure they are clean and food safe. Some flowers should never be used on cakes because they are highly toxic...never use Hydrangeas, tulips, callas, alstroemeria, for instance. I usually cut a piece of wax paper to go between my cake and the flowers. If you have to have something to stick into your cake use a hidden pillar cut to the height of the cake surface, add the wax paper and then put the flower stems into the hidden pillar. I prefer to not use fresh flowers at all just because I have handled them for cakes in the past and they are very dirty. Wipe your hands on a white damp cloth after you handle fresh flowers and you will NEVER want to see them on real cake again. That pretty much changed my mind about it. I think seeing a florist adding unwashed grapes and cranberries in with flowers that she just cut and stuck into my cakes...including callas (poisonous) made me not like fresh flowers on cakes too. But if you handle them, wash them and are careful with what you choose they will be fine. Orchids are not only safe for cake...they are EDIBLE too. Roses you have to be careful with...they use a lot of pesticides on them...especially certain colors of roses....a flower wholesale shop told me about that when I still used fresh. You can do a search online for safe flowers and foliage for cakes. I insist that my clients sign a waiver when they use fresh flowers...that way they cant' say they were not informed if someone has a reaction to them. But, you could do the same when you use nuts! I love fresh orchids on cakes...and they are a cleaner flower too.
THe stems of the flowers can be wrapped in a special tape you can get at any local florist. Or a supermarket with a florist. That way the stem itself doesn't go in the cake. That's what they did with my cake. Lots of flowers are imported andthey have all sorts of chemicals on them. I worked very closely with a florist and that's what she always did. The tape is not harmful and it's used specifically for this reason. Good Luck!
Gosh, after listening to the two answer after mine, I am glad that orchids are edible! Not that anyone ate them because we didn't. Now with all that knowledge, forget the FLOWERS! I'm Never going to use real flowers!!! You two gals scared me good, in a GREAT WAY! Thank you for educating me!
Sincerely,
Sher
Thank you all for your advice. I am thinking if I can find a small jar maybe even for a small candle holder I could use that with that green foam in itand then I can cut the flowers low. How does that sound?
Wilton makes flower picks and most florist supply shops have little plastic dishes that you can build your arrangements in with oasis and just place that on the cake. I forgot about the florist tape...and I use that all the time myself.
