Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hey ladies,

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

I need some expertise help...I've got an inquiry from a lady asking for a CAR CAKE.  Specifically the Acura TSX....(see attached)

I've never carved a cake out before and before I commit to the order i'd like to know how to proceed with this.

I'm thinking I would have to stack cakes on top of eachother and then start carving out the shape of the cake?  Any easier methods?

Your help and advice is greatly appreciated!

I'll start by saying I've never done a 3-D car, but it's got to be like any other carved cake. Stack a good, firm cake (WASC works well) with buttercream in between - I don't recommend using a filling other than buttercream. Freeze the stack then carve and you'll be able to get better details. Good luck!
go to this website http://www.the-blueprints.com/ you can find a pattern for ANYTHING! and true to scale as well
Eileen -- thanks for the WASC tip...i'm going to make one soon and experiment with the carving :)

Melinda...awesome website! Thanks so much.
Most welcomes!
I've made a hummer cake before. Not to discourage you in the least, but vehicle cakes are very challenging. I also use WASC for carving. I never freeze it or refrigerate. I don't usually have the room in my fridge. Use a very sharp knife. The best advice I can offer is to have plenty of pictures of the acura, from different angles. Make lots of measurements. Good luck!
I was requested to do a Jeff Gordon racecar cake and found myself in the same position! Having never done a car cake before! I made all rectangular cakes then cut them to size (like building blocks). I froze the cakes as well and when I stacked my pre-cut pieces, found it easier to carve the angles and shape the cake. I feel more confident for my next car cake now! Good luck!
I have done a couple cars... not as hard as I thought. There is one in my album. I baked my cakes in large bread loaf pans and used them to carve. Was not too hard. And the cars I did sat on top of another cake so the car itself did not have to be that big. I printed a picture off the computer of the cake and used it for a template to trace.
Also never hurts to watch a few youtube videos as well.
Thanks ladies...

So the tips i've heard are:
- use WASC
- buttercream the slabs of cakes and freeze? I may have the same problem as Frostine...no room in fridge!! when you freeze the cakes do you cover it with saran wrap? I've never froze my cakes before. Does it still become moist?? How long do you freeze for??
- pictures of all angles of car!!!
Yes, wrap your cakes well when you freeze them!

I've had trouble trying to freeze then frost cakes, the frosting tends to pull away from the cake. Here's 2 cakes that I carved and frosted, at room temp.

I guess I should have said that I freeze them in order to carve and by the time I'm finish carving they are at room temperature before frosting. :)
