Evening everyone,

Does anybody know if you can use modeling chocolate to cover a sculpted cake?  If so is there a tutorial out there somewhere.  Any info is greatly appreciated!!!

I know Sandy you could certainly cover parts of your cake with modelling chocolate. You can mix modelling chocolate and fondant together to cover your cake. I mix the 2 together sometimes when I make  roses I am on a mailing list of an a cake artist who uses a lot of modelling chocolate.... thought I saved her website....  grrrr.....  couldn't find it.  Think she is a member here to???  Hopefully you will get some more succinct answers from other members.  :o)

I use her recipe for modeling chocolate and it is a great recipe!  You might try her on youtube too.  I am pretty sure she has some videos on there.

Thanks for your reply.  I will try mixing the two to give the chocolate a little more strength.

Thanks Jeri I have taken Laurens class but I don't remember her saying we could use modeling chocolate to cover the cake I will watch it again to make sure.  Thanks for replying to my discussion.  I love cakes we bake just because of all the great people you meet.

Hi Sandy!  If you look at my pictures on my page you will see that I use modeling chocolate to cover sculpted cakes all the time! In fact, I never use fondant.  Modeling chocolate (homemade) just has a better flavor than purchased fondant (in my opinion)  but I always get pretty good reviews on the taste of my cakes.  

I will tell you that modeling chocolate is very heavy, compared to fondant, but you can definitely use it rolled out thinly to cover a cake.  

I'll be glad to give you any advice that I possibly can.

Nice to meet you Phil.  I looked at your page and your cakes are fantastic!!  When you use modeling chocolate to cover a sculpted cake do you use it straight or with fondant 50/50?  I am starting a pokemon cake today and would like to cover charizard with modeling chocolate.  I am very new to modeling chocolate have make pokemon figures out of it for the same cake and they came out ok but just not sure about the covering.  Thanks for your advice.
