Need a Mold
Hi everyone.
Has anyone ever used silicone molds for sugarpaste? There are a couple i have seen that i would like to get. However, ive read that the sugarpaste is hard to get back out espcially the intricate designs? Is there a way round this ?

Only tried once Lisa and it was a disaster. I couldn't get the paste out of the mould - tried freezing it and everything. It's because the sugarpaste is too soft to push out and stay in shape. They're fine with flower paste, modelling paste etc. Or you could mix half and half or add some tylo or similar product to your sugarpaste to make it firmer. I wouldn't recommend that you use just fondant though.

Ok, thanks Katy. I thought about getting one as im having real problems with my angel wings. The butterfly cutters i have arnt the rounded edge ones if you know what i mean ? I saw a mould for some albeit very small but wasnt sure if the moulds in general were any good.
Any idea what eles i could try to make angel wings ? I googled templates, there are quite a few, but i dont know how to do the patterns.

Lisa - if it's for wings, for sure use flower or modelling paste. Sugarpaste will never hold for something as intricate as that. Are the moulds expensive? If they're not too pricey, that would be a nice easy way to go. I don't know how much experience you have in other mediums, so hesitate to confuse matters, but there are some ladies on this site that make wonderful wings from gelatin (search for 'fairy wings'. Or there is the royal icing route....

Thet mould is £4.50 so i thought id ask about using them before thinking of buying it. I was going to add tragacanth to the sugar paste? The gelatin sound really good but also sounds difficult !lol

I put my silicone molds in the freezer all the time. I just made my own snowflake mold. Very intricate. Used 100% fondant/sugarpaste. Pops out, no problem. Do you have ant cutters for leaves Lisa? They can be used for angel wings. Or make a template from paper, & using a sharp knife/exacto knife, cut out your wings from a 50/50 fondant/gumpaste mixtute. I bought some cheap cardboard designs from the dollar store you can push into fondat to create "fancy" impressions. You could do that on your wings. Even plastic lace will work. Wings are subjective... make them your own..... :o)

The only leaf cutters i have is a small ivy at the moment. never thought of leaf cutters may have to get some now ! Is there any particular leaf better for this ? The mould i have seen is rather small, i dont know if i could attatch two together maybe. I can not find a larger one anywhere.

Ok Lisa
There are 2 things you can do.
1. Use your Ivy leaf cutter, cut out 3, assemble like a fan. One leaf in the middle, attach another one on the top of the first one, another leaf on the bottom. Does this make sense? If I could draw you a pic, I would. So once all leafs put together, if you turned right side up, it would resemble a fan.
2. Draw a wing on cardboard, find a pic on the internet. The cardboard is your template. Place the cardboard on your fondant/sugarpaste, cut out the with with a sharp knife.

Royal Icing -
Draw the design you want onto wax paper (parchment, baking paper, greaseproof). Make up some royal icing (no glycerine just lemon juice and water) - pipe your design directly onto the wax paper. Leave for a few days to dry really hard, gently peel off. Handle with care lol!

Brilliant ideas !! thank you so much :-) Gonna try all of these. Ive been a naughty girl ! Ive bought a veiner !! And a set of 3 Hydrangea cutters. I had to, the cutters were 99p ! oops ! Ive got a writing nozzel. Is that the one i use ?

Yes Lisa - a thin writing nozzle. I would use one of the larger sizes to practice with then then down to 2 or 1 if you feel you can manage it.

I use molds all the time for gumpaste. LOVE them. You can get the most intricate details. Check out the First Impressions Molds or Sunflower Sugar Arts. LOVE my molds soooo much.
