Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi everyone, ive just joined. Ive been looking for ages for a great cake site and ive finally found it !

Im kind of new to this, although i can make sugarpste flowers and shoes etc. I watched my nan for years but its only now that ive stated to do it for myself.

Please forgive me if ive posted this in the wrong place!

I made myself a birthday cake last week, for my birthday . I made a pair of black glittered high heel shoes , butterflies & flowers ( blossoms and carnations) all made fom sugarpaste.

And now ive been sked to do a 21st birthday cake ! Panic !!! What have i done ?! lol )

I have so many questions and im hoping to get some geat advice on here from you all and make some newfriends too.

Ive been asked to make a giant cupcake. With white chocolate butter icing. Could i use a white chocolate ganache instead ?

This is for the 25th nov so, hopfully enough time to get it right. I have seen the moulds for these, has anyone used one before ? Also, how much cake mix would i need ? And im terrified about piping it  ! What size nozzel? Would i need a large piping bag ?

Im so sorry for all the questions!

Thank you for any help with all this.

Lisa, when I first started to try flower making, I was using sugarpaste mixed with tylo powder and I just could not get right - too dry, too sticky, petals would break just by looking at them.  Got so peed off with it, that I nearly gave up.  Then I treated myself to some flower paste and my eyes were opened, so much easier to work with and that small packet went a long way.  But now I know how the paste should feel for it to work properly I will go back to trying the tylo mix.  I'm also going to try Les' idea of mixing sugarpaste and flowerpaste.

try looking at one of the mail order company's see how they price out for you, i always use ready made frankly it saves all the faffing about and is always consistant and as long as you seal it properly it keeps for ages and ages.

i can recommend surbiton sugarcraft they do squires flowerpaste in all the available colours (22 I think at the last count) for around £4.50 ish per pack if you order monday - Thursday before 12 they normally deliver next day too and postage isn't too horrendous.

Thank you both,

i know what you mean about it feeling right Katy, I know when i add the tragacanth, its just right . I got a 25g bag for £2.50 i was gointg to get tylo, but the lady advised that with tragacanth, i wouldnt need to use as much as i would with tylo and it would last me longer.

Thanks for the mail order help Les

:-)

Ah that's good to know - I'll get tragacanth next time, thanks/

Its stonger than tylo, and just add a bit at a time, you can feel it working so you know when you have put enough in. It depends on how much sugarpaste im woking with, say 115grams, i add half a teaspoon.

If you need to add any more you'll just know. Also stong colours like black, red etc are the worst to work with but its much easier with the tragacanth.

Hey, glad i could be of some help for a change ! ;-)
