Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Today is Thanksgiving Day here in Canada. And, it is the best opportunity to thanks all of you who have been visiting this page. I thank to all of you who have posted tutorials (great tools for me), in addition thank all of you who have e-mailed me. Thanks as well to all of you who have encouraged me in many ways like all the people overseas where our only way of communication has been through pictures and chat. Furthermore, a huge THANKS to all of you for the friendship we have built through Facebook.

Despite, today being a very special day. Unfortunately and, thanks to a lady who considers my baking at home is illegal, I have to stop with something I consider my passion, a hobby and therapy. With this activity I am not affecting the life of anybody in this building……. just this lady and, apparently the City of London.

Now  since I love to have my brain and talent working I have decided to begin working with silicone molds. Silicone is a very versatile material and a good way to save time and make cakes or cupcakes decoration easier. In addition, you can have a unique topper because I do not create more than 3 sets of the same mold sets.

I have a few molds already made, I will post pictures later and you can see the silicone mold and the sugar paste final result plus additional information.

Well my friends, once again thank you, thank you, thank you and, have a wonderful week ahead.

Awesome Astrid!

All the best to you :)

I am so sorry Astrid. Do you live in a Apt building or Condo??  Was there a condo board?  So very sad that one person could create such a fuss.  I don't know the Health Dept rules in London. Here in Burlington, we DON"T need a separate kitchen to do a cake business. But in Hamilton, only 1/2 hour away, they DO need a separate kitchen and work area. Can you meet the food & safety regulations set out by the city of London?

I am glad you can go to plan B and can get creative with making molds.  :o)

thanks

thanks June, unfortunately there are people out there that do not have anything to do, and the only motivation in their lives is to make life difficult for people around.  However I will continue with experiments in my kitchen,  where my biggest critics and those who approve of the recipes are my son and my husband, so I'll keep building my cookbook. :)

I would like to invite you to see my molds on my facebook page. (starting tomorrow).  They will be  sold only within Canada.

Once again Thanks again and have a great week ;)

Well that sucks, doesn't it?  Why do people have to be so rotten, is it jealousy or just plain mean minded?  Astrid your message was lovely and I'm sorry this has happened to you.  I hope the mold (or mould as we like to call it over here lol) making goes well and takes off for you.  All the best.

Hey Katty good to "see" you here again. And yes, I am trying to understand why this lady did what she did, but so hard to find the answer. the life continues and I need to leave the bad experiences in the past so now I am focus in my silicone "moulds" (thanks for that, here in Canada we share almost the same vocabulary with UK ;)

I am working on Christmas Moulds and I hope to find in that activity another good hobby, (crossing fingers), I do not know if I can post pics here I will try to post them and see what happen.

Anyway, many thanks for your kind words and the the good wishes and  Have a wonderful weekend ;)

I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason.  Who knows? She might have done you a favor in the long run.  Only time will tell.  Wishing you all the best in the future.

And June you know what  is sad and very frustating, I visited one bakery here in London, just to "discover" the mystery behind a licence, ;) and let me tell you I would not buy a cake from that place ever in my life.  The hygiene conditions.....terrible but that is life and the rules that we do not understand sometimes. Happy weekend ;) OMG I thing I need a glass of wine !cheers! ;)

Well Astrid

Firstly, I have done some checking, and it seems in London, Ont you cannot bake & sell from your house. Even if you put in a separate commercial kitchen.  Have you ever thought of using a church kitchen?  They are usually approved by the health dept. Most church kitchens sit pretty idle all week. You could bake & decorate from there. It is a thought. You can still bake for family & friends at home. This person can't stop you from doing that. Will be watching for your post about your upcoming molds.  I have made a few molds, of jewellery, in the last 2 days. Lots of fun.  :o)

Hi Goreti, you are right.  we never know why things that we think are illogical for us are very logical for the Almighty. Thanks for your kind words. Have a happy weekend ;)

Yes.... after I made my 2 broaches, I have been looking around for other items to mold....  hee hee. Nice thing about making your own mold is that it is unique... no one else can duplicate it!!

Don't know if you have ever heard of the store Icing Inspirations?  it is in Kitchner. Chrissy, the owner is a member of CCDG....  Canadian Cake Decorators Guild.  That is what happened to her. Someone, she thinks another decorator, reported her to the local health dept. She startred using a church kitchen. Then her &  hubby decided to open a business doing cakes, teaching, selling decorating supplies. She also has a very large commercial kitchen area she rents out for cake decorators who can't use their home. She felt she wanted to help decorators because of what happened to her.

You should think about joining CCDG. Ther is a chapter in London.  :o)
