well tonight I'm starting cake decorating classes at our local college. I thought being self taught I might learn some different or easier ways to do things, and guess what the first lesson is tonight yep its roses in sugar hahaha as if i've not had enough practise at them over the past few months I just hope its not gonna be red ones!!!! Still i'm sure I will learn other things as well and at least its a chance to meet like minded "cakie" folk.

I am a self taught decorator of 20+ years. I have recently entertained the thought of taking a Wilton course offered at our local Michael s craft store. I wouldn't take the beginners, more along the lines of advance gumpaste flowers or something like that. Good luck with your classes!
haha Les - how typical is that? A bit of a busman's holiday for you then. I'm sure there will be plenty in the other classes that will help you and, as you say, the chance to actually meet fellow cakers will be great. Don't go showing off tonight lol! Let us know how the classes go - I envy you.
Well I wanted to start from scratch so I could see if there was easier ways to do things especially as I'm a firm believer in "it dont matter how much you know there's always something new to learn" although I must admit when the 1st thing last night was roses in sugarpaste (not gumpaste) i nearly freaked lol especially as it was pouring with rain and really humid - not my best work lol. But I did learn how to make the tiny ribbon bows something I've never been able to master before as nearly all the stuff online is fine if your right handed and I'm a lefty. Next week we're doing a sculpted piggy cake and that will really be something new for me. Was great to meet some fellow cakers and to help some of them too, but you know it Katy I couldn't help showing off a teeny tiny bit lol althought the instructor did ask me what the heck I was doing in the beginners class.
Pics of piggy cake to be put on next week - as long as it doesn't turn out looking awfull lol
Sounds like a great evening Les, so glad you enjoyed it. So, a leftie huh - me too! That's often my excuse for my ham fistedness (bad workman blaming his tools yada yada). My Mum always used to say that I looked like a bull in a china shop and she had terrible trouble teaching me anything - especially knitting. My brother used to spend hours trying to teach me to write with my right hand and eventually gave up in frustration. I don't know about you, but in my childhood days, it was a teensy bit of a stigma to be lefthanded. I remember one of my aunts (not my favourite person in the world), said to my Mum - I would never allow any child of mine to be lefthanded! Needless to say my Mum told her where to get off.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the sculpted cake - I do find that quite hard and would love to improve. Enjoy! xx
Oh My Tracy
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!!! Trust me, I have taken them, and I am betting after 20 yeats + YOU could tea ch them, and not the other way around. Better to take lessons from a seasoned decorator or college. That is my 2 cents.
:o)

Good for you Les
Bet you will be able to teach or help the other students for sure. I am also a firm believer that you can always learn new ways of doing things.
Funny Katy, my Dad was left handed, but was "slapped" on his hand repeatedly until he "learned" to use his right hand.
