Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Can anyone give me some assistance on what I should charge for this cake.  It was a 9" vanilla & chocolate cake with strawberry filling.  The hat was a 6" cake with 40 cupcakes.  I'm trying to get an idea of the pricing because I've been told that I'm selling myself short.

Amen to that like June said they all come up with excuses which may nothing more than lies so never again let someone do you dirty.

Did you ever get the rest of your money ?

I agree 100%, I will never allow someone to come with a story again. For specialty cakes the balance will have to be paid there days prior to delivery.

Fortunately, I did get it two weeks later

Sadly this happens all to often. Last week i delivered a cake 45 min away and when i got there she asked me if i could paypal her because she didnt want her hubby to know how much she was spending. i PayPal her called and emailed. no response. her balance was $100 so after a week I told her that if she did not pay in 2 days i would be forced to file a theft of services with the police department. And if this went to court she would be liable for all court cost and interest on her balance. I min later she sent me a paypal payment.  People do not realize that we do not make much money off cakes. her cake took me 18 hours to do and was 3 tier. i made minimum wage.

OMG, I had no idea you could do that. I'm so glad you got your money. But it's a shame that you have to go to such drastic measures to collect.

it is. We have a law here in AZ that if if you do work for someone and they refuse to pay you (weather your licensed or not) you can file a "Theft of Services" Charge and they could get a ticket and appear in court. then they have you and the courts to pay after that. They made that law for the taxi cab services because people would tell them once they got to their destination they would skip out on the money

This is great information to have. I just looked it up and it seems to be applicable in all states.

You ladies have got me thinking??? I am from Ontario, Canada, & I do not believe we have a law like this. All we have here is what we call Small Claims Court. Trouble is, even if you win your case, you don't always get your $$$. But sometimes just the threat makes people "pay up". Think I am going to investigate & see if anything like this does exsists here? Anyway, this is why you gotta be up front with your customer about $$ right from the start. Don't be squimish... saves a lot of hassle all the way round.

I always take a deposit. not im thinking i will up my deposit from 20% to 40% just to be safe. I can believe people try to take advantage. We have small calims court as well. you would think if threatened by that they would pay up

I am a rookie with it as well, but I think you are pricing too low.  After looking at your cake, you should have gotten $200.00 for all of it.  Just image the cupcakes alone.  Most people would charge $2.00 to $3.00 for cupcakes by themselves.  I know a lady in Baltimore who charges $20.00 a dozen for her cupcakes, and $25.00 for speciality cupcakes.  I know the fondant is expensive by itself, which in Baltimore, it is almost $23.00 a box.  Most of your pricing is your timing to make it.  Now if the fondant cost over $50.00, why would you charge that cake that price.

I am so shocked that people have the nerve to order items with others and expect them, with out payment.

I have only one thing to say to this. when a friend asked me to make a cake for her sister's 1 year anniversary I made it clear up front. I said lets talk about what you want done and once that was done I said will that be cash check or charge. I did not start the cake until payment was completed. if you own a bakery walk over to the register and with a great big smile say will that be cash check or charge. If you don't own a shop and use paypal change this statement to will that be cash, check, charge or paypal. It works
