Okay so ive been looking at alot of people pictures on here and i gotta ask, How do you make the fondant shiny? and also how do you get fondant to stick to a cake, for instance like on the side of a already fondanted cake? Thanks so much for your help! Im learning alot on this website!

If you're using confectioners sugar (no cornflour added to it) then it will absorb into the dark colour over time. But if it's a type of sugar that has cornflour added you can use a brush dipped in isopropyl alcohol and it will pick up the white easily, and the isopropyl alcohol evaporated really quickly leaving no residue.
Is it okay to eat the item after it's been brushed with isopropyl?
Yes, It doesn't leave any residue. A lot of the "cake decorating alcohol" is isopropyl alcohol.

I steam, I put a cooling rack over a pot of boiling water and put my flowers, figures whatever on the rack upsidedown for just a few seconds.  Works pretty good just don't leave them to long.

How do you make fondant shiny?

I bought a steamer for clothes, and that will add shine to your cakes/flowers. As stated above

There is a trick I learned about making your cakes look glossy, by using PAM spray, and the nice thing is it comes in a butter flavored spray which seems to soak into the fondant very nicely and left a beautiful shine.

I just use my iron too. :) Bought a small steamer but it didn't work at all, so i went back to using my iron. Haven't had any problems at all.

Just finished making a Guitar Cake. This is scary ahhhh wanted it to look shiny so after reading everyones comments decided to airbrush it with vodka, looks ok at the moment! hoping that it will stay that way in the morning.

Interested in how your cake looks after it dries Taina. I posted above I bought a steamer. Well it worked great, & the 3rd time I went to use it, it broke. Leaked like a sieve all over my kitchen counter. I know the only steamers that last long & work well are those used for clothing. They have the long hose. But even on sale, the price is prohibitive for me. Can't justify the price. So will resort to the tips & tricks stated here. :0)

You don't need a steamer necessarily. You can make up a mix of equal parts of vodka and white Karo syrup and brush it on or thin it with more vodka and put it in a spray bottle and mist your fondant with it. This is especially great for bows and small accent pieces but will work on your whole cake as well. To stick pieces of fondant together, mix some small bits of gumpaste or fondant into a little bit of water and use it as "glue". Apply it with a a small paintbrush or the tip of your finger. A little goes a long way.

Sadly woke up this morning and it didn't retain its glossy look,  maybe i didn't spray enough on?  What is Karo syrup? I don't know if its available here in NZ, unless it has a different name???
