I am so happy with how my in-laws 40th anniversary cake turned out- my first cake for something other than my classes! Noticed in the pics the fondant looks a little lumpy, but I didn't notice that in reality. Everything was done in fondant AND it was also my first attempt at, not only carnations, but also making my own MMF, which tasted sooooo much better than the Wilton store-bought stuff!

My in-laws were so impressed. I don't think that anyone realized just what I could do! Plus, I had asked what their wedding colours and flowers had been and used those for the design, which was a big hit as well. Now I have created a 'buzz' in the family and among friends and have been asked to do a few more cakes for future events!

Tonight is my last Wilton course #3. My 2-tiered wedding cake will be eaten at a 'girls night' on Friday. And I'm very excited about my final course- Fondant and Gum Paste, which starts June 6th. I am loving every minute of this (although my boyfriend has been complaining a little about the electric bill from the oven being on baking so many cakes!)

Thanks! I did the carnations with fondant. I haven't worked with gumpaste yet - I start that course in June! I hadn't done carnations before (they're in the next course!), so I looked online and then improvised, lol! I just used the large flower cutter for roses, cut small slits between each 'petal', used the 'ball' end of the ball & vein tool and rubbed back-and-forth on the petal edges to make a more ragged look and stuck about 3-4 layers together with vanilla. I'm sure there's an easier way, but that seemed to work for me! I knew they turned out OK when my sister-in-law asked if they were real!

I just took a look. Wow! It looks fabulous. Are the carnations gumpaste? I haven't tried carnations yet. You have inspired me.
