When I'm making roses, basicly to save time where I want the roses to be placed on the cake. I either build a small amount of icing on the cake or use mini marshmellows to give the rose a little lift.
Taking the flower nail, I make my rose right on the nail, take a a sm. splatula slide it off the nail on to the splatula cont. placing it onto the cake where you like, use a tooth pick to slide it from the splatula to the cake.
This is sooo easy & fast. Hope it helps...

Hi Nan, If I see that the icing is getting a bit thinned during the summer time here, I usually add a bit of cornstarch or flour to stiffen the icing. It doesn't change the taste, but works great !!

i used to do icing roses on a piece of pergament paper and place em in the freezer right before i iced the cake. that gave the roses time to get hard and be placed on the cake easier and it gave me opportunities to have roses to chose from and the cake deco wouldnt melt as fast as it uses too in florida. unfortunately, the longer you leave em in the freezer the more the color fades away.
