I joined Cakes we bake last week and I think it's a great site.
I have been posting a few photographs of my work and I have had some very flattering comments ( which is inspiering!)also it seems that "what are the crowns made of" is a popular question so I have taken this oppotunity to describe how I make a crown topper.
The support as I like to call it (the body of the crown) is usually made from card not just any old card I might add but a high quality product.
The decoration varies a great deal depending on the clients requirements, metal leaf gold, silver and copper are often invloved Crystals, pearls, glitter, threads, ribbons and a lot of hand drawn details using pens and embossing techniques bring the design together and make it personal.
I treat crowns that are to be used on buttercreamed cakes so the crown can't soak up any fat ! The crowns can be secured to the cake with a dot of icing or a decoration around the bottom of the crown a string of pearls etc.
As I hardly ever meet the bride and groom or the cakemaker! getting the crown colours to match a cakes is achieved by using colour swatches pieces of fabric ribbon or anything else that will help me to develop a feel for the "style " a couple want to express.
I have been a watercolour artist for over 20 years so I am comfortable using paper and colour and experimenting with different techniques. The crowns take time and much patience to produce but I just love making them (it helps to be obssesive!) and I love a challenge. The crowns are supplied ready to pop on the cake and go all over the world.
Is this a blog? well I suppose it must be!
I have to get on as a Peacock crown is calling to me for a bit more splendour to be added to it. I will post a photograph of it soon.
I would love to hear any comments you may have as feedback is very important.
With Thanks
Tanya
