Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Wanted to experiment with different techniques since I was making my own birthday cake. I had to revise my attempts, one being lace on the cake, as it's been so hot, humid and rainy. Lace just was drying. I wanted to try and get the lacey look from my china tea cup, my inspiration, but wasn't too be. So plan B. There's always a plan B! Two bottom tiers are cake dummies, top is coconut cherry Victoria sponge. Recipe courtesy of Katy NOTT of CWB. Unfortunately, although I stored my cake in the coolest room, the cake seems to have developed a bulge....this after having to put the fondant on the cake ..twice! Grrrr. Thank goodness this wasn't for a customer....just little ole me. I made the cameo with a mould courtesy of Mel of SugarandSpiceCakes....thanks Mel.

ok - useful advice.  But mine happened with no fondant on it!  The buttercream just exploded in it's skin!

Thanks so much Katy. Yes...that Victoria sponge was truly devine . You just can't mess it up.

Katy, here's  what my very experienced cake club leader (40 yrs. a decorator) said about the bulge:

"The bulge was because of internal combustion.   Probably the cake has a filling that has gotten warm with the heat and humidity and has exploded under the fondant.  The only way to deal with that is to prick the fondant in several places to let the air out."  There you go, it's happened to her too.

Seems my original post didn't!

So I'll say it again.  I think this is lovely June.  I love the little doily effects, cameo is lovely and you have the Wedgewood colour to a T.

I had the bulge thing happen to me on something I did recently.  It was huge!  Never had it happen before so no idea what the problem was.  Wondered if I had overbeaten the buttercream for the crumb coating?

And don't you just love that Victoria Sponge recipe?  So versatile and always a winner.

Happy birthday June... Nice cake and the "coconut cherry Victoria sponge" sounds very appetizing :)

Happy Birthday again June!  This is a darling cake!  Looks kind of like my Wedgewood necklace.  And I love coconut.  Hope you had a great day!   And next year, let your Hubby experiment in the kitchen for your cake, he might surprise you, or at least give you a good laugh!

I have been waiting for Tues. to get here, knowing it was your special day.  A special day for a special person!  Perfect!!  ,

I have been watching the two boys from next door all day long, 8:30 to 4:30.  Made them both take a nap from 1-3, they are 2 1/2 & 5.
