if your needing to cover with chocolate ! you can pc it like sheets of it ! , and keep rubbing with your warm fingers , as you  build a smooth surface , or add melted chocolate let it cool than rub , that's how it did my chocolate heads , also , the bottom part should be RCT'S ! CAKE ON THE TOP LAYER. It's much easier to cut the shape on the bottom out of RCT. well any way if I had to do 1 that's how I would. as for black I would have to say gumpaste ,

That is something I do not have to worry about, June, because I will not be using modeling chocolate again in place of fondant....not in the foreseeable future, anyway.

ha ha...I thought they were screws too! Good modelling chocolate isn't hard...it's soft and pliable. So, yes, probably more corn syrup.

Exactly, June!  This cake would have probably been a lot easier if I had used a firm pound cake instead of the soft, moist chocolate cake.  I was afraid to make the opening in the front large enough because I was afraid it would collapse.  And, the modeling chocolate was so heavy, it pushed the cake down until the dowels stuck up through the top (as you can clearly see).  Mike said they looked like screws in the top of the cake.  The modeling chocolate got stiff too fast, too.  Probably should have used more corn syrup.  I sort of love working with RCT's :o)

I think any sculpted cake is hard Sandra. Carving it just so...covering without lumps or bumps....adding all the details...yikes. My skate was RCT, and that was difficult enough..but had it been cake...no way. I do believe your macaw cake was easier.... as you said, just time consuming from all he elements....

Yeah, it is a miracle any of us made it to adulthood, isn't it, Gali!
