I've heard of different bakers using a gum paste cutout in place of the run out collar. Little bit of a cheaters trick, I would imagine. lol!

I tried run out collars once Les.  Just the once, haven't tried since and you can guess the reason why.....

Its not finished with yet Linda, I.ve been trying to do a run out collar for the top but so far without success I;ve broken 2 already lol but you know me i'll keep trying and then if all goes to plan its going to have a three dimensional lacework bell on the top. It;s more of an experiment really just to see exactly what I'm capable of but I think I would only do this on a wedding cake so I guess it would depend on the budget of the bride. But actually it's suprisingly quick to pipe all those hearts it only took me about 40 minutes and the bridged extension work about 3 or 4 hours once I got the hang of it

I missed this one Les. Now that is a lot of hearts!! Now that you have done your dummy...how much do you think you would actually charge for a cake done in this method? You put a ton of work into that. Do you think people would be willing to pay for all the hours you put in?

got the sheets from one of our local sugarcraft shops Katy, works a treat with lace pieces not sure it would work with bigger run out pieces though

I like the sound of the 'automatically release' bit!  Where do you get your acetate sheet from Les?  Cake stuff or general hardware?

LOL , TFS Les ; x

There is 96 of the lace hearts on the dummy which is an 8"square but I made about double that number piped onto an acetate sheet so they automaticallly release as they dry, they are actually stronger than they look but you still have to handle them pretty carefully but as long as your gentle and handle them by the point I think I broke about 15 so I've got a few over if you want a go lol.
