Stained glass design. I must have been crazy to try this one out. Stickiest mess I have ever worked with. Bottom tier is 12", middle tier is 8". and top tier is 5". All tiers are covered in fondant, then black royal icing was used to do all of the outline work to give it a raised design, then I used piping gel to fill in all of the 'glass' areas. Took me 3 days to finish. Thanks for looking!

This is outstanding!  you certaqinly had patience but it is so worth it, just look at that result!  I'm not a stained glass fan really but this is really amazing.

Elaine, I saw a cake on Cake Central where the person was making a Tiffany lamp shade and if I remember correctly, they used luster dust. It was beautiful. I don't know how it would come out by just using the gel colors. I also wonder how it would turn out by doing all of the painting first, and then going back with clear gel and only having the sticky mess one time. The sticky mess is only on your fingers. It doesn't get so much on the cake itself, as that piping gel is pretty thick.

Lovely, I wonder how this would come out either using paste colours or lustre to paint in the panels? Might have a try.

Amanda, Once I piped the black royal icing onto the fondant, it dried very quickly so that within about an hour I was able to take about 1/2 ts. of piping gel at a time and place it in an artists plastic pallet where it has indents in it for color. Then I mixed up whatever color I wanted in that little well. I used very thin liner brushes for all of the tight spots and a flat soft brush for bigger areas. I started on the bottom tier first (and wished I hadn't) then worked on the top tier and finished with the middle tier. I did get a tiny drop of color on the top of the top tier but found that using vodka and Q-tip cleaned it off right away.

Gorgeous! Though, now I want to try it for myself! Did you just brush in coloured piping gel by themselves for the "stained" parts?
