This was a stressful attempt - not knowing how to start and what the outcome would be. But it worked out fine, thankfully!
This was a rich chocolate cake, inner filling was caramel and chocolate butter cream with chocolate ganache.

Gorgeous! what a wonderful job!
Katy, I also started doing this for the family and it give me so much joy. Then people started asking me for quotes. After I had my first baby, I stayed home and had to do something to make some extra money. So this turned out to be my business, though I love doing what I am doing. I work my best at night after my little one and husband is in bed - so I tend to work till late at night of most of the times through the night till the next day.
But in anyway......Sandra thank you for congratulating me on my baby, can't wait - too long now!
I have NEVER done a cake for money, but I have thought about pricing should the question ever arise. The conclusion I have reached is that no one would pay me for what I do because it is so time consuming. As Bonnie and I discussed yesterday, I am so picky, I would average about $.22 per hour if I were being paid.
Like Katy, I have decided the best pricing practice for me would be to charge for the actual cost of making the cake plus what ever amount I decide to award myself for the labor, depending upon how the cake is decorated.
Congratulations on your soon-to-arrive little girl!
I rarely do cakes for money Corni as I am not a professional. But I always feel when I have done one for the family 'do they really know how much work went into this? And do they know how much it cost to make it?'. I have occasionally made for a specific paid order and I probably do undercharge a bit. But I do because I enjoy it and as long as I cover my costs and make a bit of pocket money, I'm OK with that.
But yours is a question I see a lot. People scared of pricing themselves out of the competition, but working for peanuts. Very difficult to get right.
Already had 2 other queries, but will only be able to continue with orders late September. My baby is on her way, I am in my last trimester (36 weeks) of pregnancy, so rest is now very important.
Just a question, do you guys sometimes quote clients on a cake which you think is a fair price. And then when the cake is done and dusted and delivered think about how much work and time went into your creation, then realizing you should have quoted more for the cake?
Happens to me a lot...................just wondering?
After this, you will probably have the opportunity!
terrific - the face is awesome!

Thanks June and Goreti for your compliments ;o)
Sandra I actually loved doing this, because I am a horse lover too - have 2 of my own.
Would love to make more horsey cakes :o)
