I based the design on the bride's wedding gown.

This one is fab!
Thanks for the info Bettina. This is such a great place for learning these tricks from others.
Simply gorgeous.
It's brilliant Bettina. sorry, one more question - what did you use to get the royal icing so black?
Thank you everyone. : ) Katy, I pricked out the main design elements first and then piped over them and added more detail as I went, freehand.
I recently viewed a tutorial online at Craftsy called Modern Piping. I had never made royal icing this way before. You beat it until it's shiny and meringue like and can hold detail. It was so much softer to pipe and easier on my hands than the way I was taught to pipe royal icing - being from the string work and extension 'school' of piping royal icing.
I was delighted with the way it piped and it was a totally different technique to what I had been used to. The tip of the pipe is actually touching the cake surface! It made it easier to 'draw' and the cake didn't have to be tilted in order to pipe effectively! I was very excited about it and will be using this technique again.
Of course you can't use this type of royal icing to do lace and extension work as it has too much air in it, and the lines can be wobbly until you get the technique right, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Bettina this is totally wonderful. You have the design to a T. Did you freehand pipe the pattern? Incredible work.
BEAUTIFUL , LOVE THIS IDEA OFBLACK AND WHITE , AND YOU NAILED THE DRESS
