While looking for inspiration for my mil's b-day cake, I came across this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP8sBMDO_u3XywH1aP5vFpQ and decided that is what I wanted to do. Pretty happy with the result. Cakes are both champagne, one is filled with orange curd and the other with chocolate ganache & raspberry, both covered in champagne SMBC and MMF. Really enjoyed making this one even though pine tree branches were a pain to make.

I'm the same ladies. I design what I would like to do, then usually do what I am actually capable of! Ne'er the twain shall meet! This time, however, I do have to follow the design pretty much to the letter as my stepdaughter has seen the design painting and that's what she wants for her partner's 60th. Plus she wants to frame the painting for him too!
I THINK WE ALL DO THE SAME THING ! we have a plan how we want it to look , and as we go ! the plan go's out the window ! lol when I received an order for the corps bride cake , I had a picture of what she wanted ! , have to give them what they want !
Same thing happens here. Sometimes the design is dictated by the location of booboos lol. Luckily, the cakes usually turn out a lot better than I (vaguely) envisioned.
Sandra, I sometimes do a very rough sketch but don't always follow it or I'll sketch a few different designs. Most of the time, I'm like you a vague idea what I want and then just go with it when I'm actually decorating. Some end up totally different from what I was thinking.
So far, I have done a very poor job of planning my cake designs. I have a vague notion of how I want the cake to look and make decorations accordingly. When it comes time to decorate, it is sort of like decorating a Christmas tree.....just put stuff where I think it looks good. I've tried sketching out the design, but didn't get very far :o(
Thank you Inoka.
Very nice Goreti!
Thanks Sandra. I was pretty happy with how it came out. One of those that came out just like I planned it.
I am happy this one came back around, Goreti. It is awesome!
Thank you
