My Cake # ?, Wilton Buttercream Ribbon Rose

Now don't laugh, but I just came across this one, it is from one of my 2013' Wilton classes. The one where we were to make buttercream ribbon roses. lol I just happened to have this cake available to put them on! As you can see, it is a strawberry one, done in buttercream. Then I added the roses, and the leaves as the borders for all 3 tiers.

Hi Betty!

After viewing all your cakes, AGAIN, I don't see that you even need gumpaste. You certainly don't need it for your flowers, they are perfect as are. Might come in handy if you needed to do figurines, I guess. I now am so into the GummyGel, that I have not used gumpaste, or fondant, for a while now.

BUT! If you do decide to do this just for the heck of it, look for the sales first! Locally, they are on sale right now. I bought all my classes when they were half price, $20 each, the same with all the 'boxes' that were needed for each class, bought them when they were half off. They, Michaels, also have a 40% off coupon on the most expensive item you purchase each time you go in, so I save a lot on molds, luster & petal dust, cake pans, etc.. that way too. Even if I don't have a coupon on me, all I have to do is to request my 40% off, and they give it to me. If I already had all the stuff that came in a box, my instructor did not insist that I buy that box, she let me use my own stuff. Just look on the side of the box to see it's contents. I had quite a collection of things by then! lol I even took the classes out of order, so I could suit my schedule. I took class 1, then 3, then 4, then 2.

I have a recipe for 'GummyGel' for decorating cakes, works with all molds. http://www.cakeswebake.com/profiles/blogs/homemade-gel-for-decorati...

And if you are into making your own molds, my 'Mold' recipe works very well. http://www.cakeswebake.com/photo/food-grade-mold-recipe?commentId=4...

It works best if clarified, but I did not know about 'clarifying' when I made this recipe. lol One of you cakers brought it to my attention. Now I clarify both my mold mix, and my GummyGel mix, before pouring. Bubbles can certainly mess up a mold!

It is a very good thing that there are so many kids in the neighborhood, or I would never be able to get rid of all these cakes that I practice on! lol

Thanks Bonnie, I would like to know more about "gum paste" stuff, have to check it out. Most of what I learned was by trial & arrow too and lots of practice..

They give one all of the basics.  Basic buttercream, basic fondant, torting & stacking, flowers, etc...  I took it mostly to get the right consistency when using buttercream.  I was having trouble getting my flowers to not 'PUDDLE!'. lol  And I knew nothing about crusting buttercream, etc...  I have learned so much in the last year & a half.  Go to the site below & check out each class.  It was fun!  We all had a good time laughing at each other's results.  I was able to share my mold recipe with them, came up with it while still taking the classes.  Came up with the GummyGel recipe just recently.  They also all preferred the gumpaste recipe that I was using at the time, the instructor said it had the right consistency. lol  CONSISTENCY was my main goal, the reason I took the class.  I was learning things at a pretty rapid pace, just watching youtube, and joining my 3 cake sites.  And I have not looked back, am having too much fun!
