Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Every month since February, I have been giving away one cake as a good will gift among those in my community. This is the one I made for May. I did a Shirley Wilson and made a plaque out of gum paste that says Happy Mother's Day. Her cakes always look so classy with those trademark plaques of hers. Thank you Shirley for such a great idea! I made the buttons from a mold I made from a real button. The fondant is lemon/butter/vanilla flavored marshmallow fondant. I covered the cake board with it too and airbrushed it gold to match. The flowers on top were going to be real as an added bonus....until I priced them at the grocery store florist! Starting price for a cake topper? $50.00!!! So, I opted for silk. I so stink at making flowers. I know, I know, I just need to practice. ugh!

Katy, I had the same experience that you are talking about when it comes to making my own. I finally found this site (below) and once I realized what I was doing wrong, they come out perfect. Try it again. That site that I sent you to has all kinds of tutorials on it for making your won molds. I love that site.

Linda, I've tried a few moulds (sorry, but just have to spell it the English way lol), from the silicone plastique and quite frankly, they were rubbish!  Having looked at this link, I think I know partly why as I didn't build them up at the back.  That really does make sense.  Might try again..............

awww, Katy, you are so sweet! Those buttons were easy to make a mold of. The key thing, is to build it up underneath the button somewhat (as high as the little thing that you thread it through-here is a picture tutorial of how-to do this) before making the mold. I didn't have the clay they are talking about when I made my mold, so I just used gum paste and let it dry before making the mold. I knew I was never going to use the button again since I bought it for the very reason of making a mold, and figured that if any of my friends wanted a mold out of that button, I'd have it already prepped.

You know, I keep coming back to this cake because I think is really lovely.  Your billowing (is that right?), is so puffy and luxurious looking and those buttons are gorgeous.

The cake looks gorgeous Linda. Your buttons are absolutley classic as is the plaque. I love your idea, you are such a giving person.  Keep on caking and having fun.

Thank you Holly! And also, Katy, when I am giving away a cake, there is total freedom in how I want to create the cake. I think the reason that I had never pursued a full blown business in the past and now, is the very fact that when it is a 'commissioned' cake, it has to be to the person's specifications, and while sometimes that is fun, there are also times that I dread making a cake because of the subject matter. That is why I admire Gail's work so much, because she is doing exactly what she wants to be doing and creating exactly what she wants to create. No pressure...pure fun.

What a great idea Linda.  It is nice to have a reason to bake, you're right and it's also lovely to give a cake to someone. Nice one.

Grace, I used the food paste air brush colors and just painted the pearl and the gold. Very easy, and thank you!
