Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Every month since February, I have been giving away one cake as a good will gift among those in my community. This is the one I made for May. I did a Shirley Wilson and made a plaque out of gum paste that says Happy Mother's Day. Her cakes always look so classy with those trademark plaques of hers. Thank you Shirley for such a great idea! I made the buttons from a mold I made from a real button. The fondant is lemon/butter/vanilla flavored marshmallow fondant. I covered the cake board with it too and airbrushed it gold to match. The flowers on top were going to be real as an added bonus....until I priced them at the grocery store florist! Starting price for a cake topper? $50.00!!! So, I opted for silk. I so stink at making flowers. I know, I know, I just need to practice. ugh!

Well Cheryl

The last batch I made, I got bubbles, and I think it was because I overheated my marshmallows in the micro, and stired to hard, incorporating air.  I just bought supplies to make mmf. This time, I will be more careful.  Going to monitor my results.

Cheryl, sounds to me like you might be incorporating the bubbles into your fondant when you knead it.  Try to make sure you knead and don't squeeze.  Alternatively, your powdered sugar may not have dissolved properly.  If you have time, leave your fondant to rest for a while (overnight) if poss, so that any tiny sugar lumps soften, then knead it again.

Thank you Cheryl. I haven't done too many give away cakes of late, as I have been dealing with some personal family issues, but hopefully, I can get back on track with that. Bubbles. Hmmm....I'm not sure how to get rid of the bubbles. You may be over kneading it and that is where the bubbles are coming from. Although, I can't see how over kneading would give too many bubbles. Try rolling it out a little between kneading, and when you find some bubbles, slice them open with a knife before continuing to knead. Someone else on this thread may also have some good ideas, so hopefully, they will also read your post and have some good ideas. =O)

It's is so pretty and what a lovely idea to give such a beautiful gift to your community. I do have one question for you Linda. Do you ever have any problems with your marshmallow fondant? I make my own and the first few times I made it, it turned out great, now I'm getting lots of bubbles. What am I doing wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated as everyone loves the taste of mmf but it needs to look great too!
