Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

My daughter asked me early in the week to make a birthday cake for he Mom in law’s 65th birthday party today. I was very busy, and I remembered I got an email from The Cake Blog with this cake. The Winter Hat…perfect..quick, cute, simple. Decided I would do my version of this cake. Made the poinsettia on the top of the hat, instead of the pom pom, and snowflakes instead of reindeer in the original. Poinsettia is made from clay craft clay.
I piped the icing on the cake..after marking off 3 distinctive rows. Went well, chilling in between. Then disaster!! My white icing started to slide off the cake!! It piped on so perfectly..seemed the right consistency. So, there I was, 8 pm at night, scraped off all the icing, made a new batch of white bc and repiped . Thank goodness cake was small, didn’t take long. Cake was gingerbread torted with gingerbread bc and iced with white vanilla bc and brown citrus flavored bc.
I hope she liked it.

Yes Katy I did triumph in the end!!.....I think it was actually my crumb coat. I was in a hurry, and I noticed it wasn't fully hard/crusted. But I thought, it will be ok. Icing was a tad soft piping, but there was plenty of meringue powder in the bc, so after refrigerating, all seemed fine. Well, don't think the crumb coat ever fully hardened, because as soon as the cake came to room temp...landslide!! Made 2nd batch extra stiff...holy moly, my arthritic hands were killing me afterwards!!!! But, eventually, they stopped aching. But, could have been worse, icing could have slid off at the party...yikes...that would have been awful!!!
