This was my first venture into Poured fondant. It's a cherry madeira cake covered in white almond marzipan and then white poured fondant. All sunflowers are handmade and tinted and the leaves and vines are mainly marzipan too.

Can't buy the poured fondant mix here in Canada. But you can take either your homemade or store bought fondant and "melt" it the micro. You add a little more water & corn syrup so it becomes runny.  I did it a long, long time ago. I had forgoten that mine cracked also. Have now read that after it is completely dry on your cake, you can use a pastry brush and lightly brush a mixture of shortening mixed with a little bit of corn syrup on the fondant. Suppose to "seal" it.  Mine looked like those crafts that were sprayed with "crackle spray".  And my family thought I did it on purpose. I use to smoosh my bc iced cakes with a clean pot scrubber cause I could never get it smooth & flat, so I gave it my own "finish". Still do it if I am in a hurry. Gives a nice affect, and like yours, people assume it is a speacial "technique"......  hee hee

June, it was so easy - it was too easy if you know what I mean! Lol.
The box said enough for 7" and I had a 10" cake oops. Made it into a thickish paste and decided as I probably didn't have enough I'd pour it straight onto the cake on the board. It covered int perfectly. I must have made it just the right consistency. After a few minutes it stopped flowing down the sides of the cake and stayed put, nice a smooth. I sprinkled a very small amount of baby lemon disco dust and prayed my sunflowers wouldn't head south - they stuck no problem at all, although the crust of the icing did egg shell crack , but it gave a nice effect in a 'Hey - I meant to do that' kind of way hahaha.
Apparently there used to be a cake like this widely for sale in the UK - which is why her mum wanted it. It didn't disappoint :) phew x

Thank you for all your lovely comments. I heard back from my customer that it tasted great - which is always a relief, especially when they've been so specific over the cake flavours. Txxx

Katy, I'm afraid I didn't get to taste the whole thing, just licked the spoon at the end :D tasted pretty good to me. Think I would rather have had it with the cake & marzipan though
