A patchwork heart cake by the very talented Lindy Smith was the inspiration for this birthday cake which I really enjoyed making as I love the icons and colors of the 60's Hippie era. I hand carved a buttercream filled vanilla orange pound cake to give it a puffy heart shape and covered it in fondant. The decorations were made with a combination of fondant and Mexican paste. Cutters were used to make the flowers and smiley faces as were the hearts which I further modified with an Xacto knife to add more curves. The Smiley faces were drawn on with black edible marker. Letters/numbers, swirls and silhouette were also cut by hand with an Xacto knife. To further personalize the silhouette I included a nose stud made with a silver dragée and a thread dread made by using gum glue to attach different colored tubular pieces of fondant. Peace and Love to all!
