Sculpted vanilla cake, Eric was carved from 2 large round cakes placed next to each other and then one placed on top of the join between the 2. I used a picture of a coiled snake which I used to work out how the coils interlocked and entwined. He was sculpted using a serrated knife.
Once he was sculpted I covered him in white fondant, pushing it into the creases and then used a diamond shaped tool which I made form wire to impress each scale one by one. When the fondant had crusted over I handpainted it with food colours and applied a glaze once finished.
The board is 18" square and covered in sugars to create the natural habitat of the corn snake. The bamboo shoots and leaves were made from gumpaste.
Everything is edible on this cake.
Apologies if you don't like looking at snakes :/ xxx

Very impressive!
Laura, I detest snakes but must give you credit. This appears to be well thought out and superbly put together. It's very realistic but creeps me out. I think you did an excellent job!!
