Sculpted vanilla cake, Eric was carved from 2 large round cakes placed next to each other and then one placed on top of the join between the 2. I used a picture of a coiled snake which I used to work out how the coils interlocked and entwined. He was sculpted using a serrated knife.
Once he was sculpted I covered him in white fondant, pushing it into the creases and then used a diamond shaped tool which I made form wire to impress each scale one by one. When the fondant had crusted over I handpainted it with food colours and applied a glaze once finished.
The board is 18" square and covered in sugars to create the natural habitat of the corn snake. The bamboo shoots and leaves were made from gumpaste.
Everything is edible on this cake.
Apologies if you don't like looking at snakes :/ xxx

Don't worry about the judges...it's their opinion only. I showed my husband, who is creeped out by snakes of any kind & he shuddered. So there you go. Did you have fun while you were creating Eric (not counting the usual stress)?
Laura, you're no joke!!!!! Very impressive!
Thanks for all the comments - you've made me soo happy :)
I made this cake for a sculpted cake competition at Cake International, I dreamt about Eric when I was stressing out over what to make - it was my first ever comp and it fell during my 1st month as a home business. The challenge was to make a cake that was entirely edible with no internal supports so a snake seemed logical to eradicate the worries with height and no support.
Amazingly he got a gold but sadly he didn't win a prize as he was not in the top 3 gold places. A lot of people told me they thought he would get 1st place but after speaking to the judges they said everything about him had been great but sadly they could not award a top 3 slot as he was not a cake that would appeal to many people. The cakes that got placed were brilliant but very cute and/or pretty/cartoony.
I was upset to start with as I hoped that the comp was judged on carving skill (he was definitely the most complicated carve out of the entries) and overall finish. But it is what it is and I am hoping that he may appeal to the judges here instead lol!!
But whatever the case I am very proud of Eric and he was donated to a reptile centre and shared amongst their customers on a fundraising day after the competition.
The fact that this cake creeps some people out, is a testament to how well done your cake was. I certainly hope that you got a written testimony by the recipiant. If not go get one ASAP!!!
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! A true work of art. Thanks for the detailed description of how you made him... :)
He is still awesome! I expect him to move evrytime I click onto the picture.
This is an amazing piece of work, I love it....
Laura, I don't like snakes but I must say, you did an excellent job.
Impressive stuff - bet the recipient was half expecting him to move :)
