I have made drapings with fondant before and battled a lot and it looked very bulky. I then decided to use gumpaste and it worked much better.

The bottom and top layers are dummies. In South Africa our traditional wedding cakes are fruit cake and is very heavy. The middle layer,  which is a fruit cake wheighs in excess of 7 kg, hence the dummies
