Eileen, anything is fair game when it comes to making something for a cake! I used to raid my son's toybox(when he was younger) for "just the right shape" and if it could be sterilized, I'd use it!

Carol, there are 6 layers of petals on the full roses.
I was using some older, extremely stiff gumpaste and just a little bit of fondant when making the carnations. I realized that it was actually a good thing...the edges would do that splitting without having to make slits. The carnations also had 5 'petals'(I used a circle cutter for the 'petals')

I tried carnations.Not a pretty site.How many layers of petals are on the full bloomed roses?
