Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

This was my contribution to the fabulous collaboration with the theme "Sweet Summer" hosted by Isabel Tamargo. There are 208 pieces total and all of them may be view at this link: https://www.facebook.com/sweetsummercollaboration
Both the girl and the dog are made with a wire armature from modeling chocolate, as are the shells. The swim suit and hair ribbons are made from gum paste and the sand is whole grain rye flour. The background is a photo.

Thank you, Goreti!  I am as slow as Christmas and modeling chocolate allows a much longer working time than fondant.  It also allows for more precise detail, if that makes sense.  I also have a lot more success getting it smooth.  It is a bit tricky to get used to because it is a lot different than fondant or gum paste.  It gets nasty greasy if you work it too much, but you just have to let it cool off for a bit.  I am beginning to really like it.  Shawna McGreevy has a wonderful picture tutorial on her site for making modeling chocolate.  Even though it only has two ingredients, chocolate or candy melts and light corn syrup, it is easy to screw up so I review it each time I make a batch.

This is really amazing. Modeling chocolate is something I have never worked with.

Wendy, I will post a few progress pictures in the forum under Don't Be A Paleface Progress.

Thank you so much for your sweet words.  I haven't mastered it, but I am making progress :o)

this is so cool! Looks so real! Would love to know more about how you do this! BTW--your "learning" how to use modeling chocolate?? I think you have mastered it! :)

Thank you so much, sweet Betty!  I am trying to learn to use modeling chocolate.  Her legs were the last thing I did on the girl and I definitely think they are the best part.  I'm starting to gt a fee for how it reacts.
