This was a birthday cake for my neighbor and she didn't care (or even notice) that the layers had spare tires!

My only filling was frosting between the layers, but it was really thick.  Oh, well, I haven't had it happen again...yet.  Thank you, ma'am.  Pat liked it.

So pretty Sandra....I don't think it was any one thing...but a series of them. Cake was probably not dense enough...perhaps your filling oozed out...did you create a dam??....and the heat/humidity...

yes that was my prob , the cake was not dense enough ! I always add 3 eggs , nx time I will add the 3rd egg ! it makes it stand up better ! to all the decorating and frosting ! you can see inside the cut cake the blue was even lighter than the chocolate ! that really caved !

If I had to guess, I would say it was because the cake was not firm enough for stacking (even though it does have dowels) AND, I wasn't kidding when I said it really has frosting and inch thick all over it.  It was good, though.  I did have it in the refrigerator, but it bulged when I took it out anyway.

Katy, got a handle on the Southern USA favorite?  It is from Southern Living in the mid 70's.  If you need it, I would be happy to post.
