So it's finally done. Think I may have overstretched myself a bit here! Wine bottle - gumpaste moulded over real bottle. Beer bottle - hand shaped (which is why it's so rubbish) from rkt covered in fondant and painted. Both labels hand painted, wine bottle to reflect hubby's favourite tipple. Box - vanilla sponge with apricot conserve, framed in June's chocolate fondant (the mess I got into with that is a whole other story). Fondant came out looking a bit like leather to me so I pursued that theme, studding the corners and 'stitching' the edges. Snacks - stilton in fondant, marked in navy paste, peanuts and biscuits in rkt coated in cinnamon and edible glitter. The dish has yet to be removed as it won't dry! Final touch of a sugarpaste rose (his birth flower for June), made to resemble the rose my mother bought him for his birthday a lifetime ago, but that is still flowering like a trooper every summer. I'm exhausted, but all in all, reasonably happy with the outcome. Eyesight has been a real trial with this one!
Oh and packing was grated white chocolate and packing peanuts in gumpaste

Don't think your a dork Katy. More than likely the mmf needed ore shortening added. I find with homemade mmf, because it is warm when you begin to knead, the tendency is to always add too much icing sugar! But it is so easily remedied as I said with much addition of shortening. I have even added a couple of tsp of coconut oil.
I think your beer bottle & snacks look awesome Katy!! You are judging your work way too harshly. :0)

Thank you all very much.  I can't tell you how nice it feels to receive your comments.  I am thinking of ditching the beer and snacks and just leaving the wine and rose.  I'm afraid I may have made it 'tacky' by adding those - decisions, decisions.

Laurie - if you wanted to see freaking out, you should have been here the last two days lol!

June - not your recipe my dear, but the dork that was trying to make it!  I'll tell you the gory details one day!

xx

Katy, I am so very impressed.  Here I am freaking out over a little old PUD cake and you are working on this masterpiece!  You may feel frustrated, but all the love you put into it shows in every detail!  Your hubby is going to love it, I am sure.  Hope you get some off time now!

I better not show this to my hubby cause I'm not doing anything like this for his birthday.  He has already told me he wants a coconut cake with pineapple filling.

Thanks so much Goreti.  Lots I would change if I ever did it again (but probably won't lol!).  No he hasn't seen it yet.  His party is on Saturday, but actual birthday on Thursday, so I'll give it to him then and then refrigerate it till Saturday.  At the moment it's hidden in the coolest cupboard in the house!  I hate when you take hours over a cake and then it gets brought out at the last minute and cut straight away.  I wouldn't normally get a cake finished so far in advance but in this case had no choice if I was going to make it a surprise.

I'm impressed.  You did a wonderful job.  He is going to be thrilled.  Has he seen it yet?
