Welcome New Cakers from Virginia

Good Morning Everyone, First of all- I would like to say that I am sorry that I have not been on here much. Little background.... about a year & a half ago I fell on ice and broke not one but both ankles- it has been a horror story since then. Anyway, I am still dealing with the ankles and many complications from the accident. I just wanted you guys to know why I have been missing in action!

Ok, now for anyone that is new to this site and to our group- WELCOME with a capital W! We are glad you have found us here. This is a terrific site not only for the professional- experienced baker, but also for the newbies to this art. There is just so much talent on here, and so many helpful people! If you have a question or need some help- there is always an answer  for you. When you have some time (if you haven't already), take a little tour around this site. The forums, etc. are amazing!

Theresa Happe (who started this) is usually on and has monitors watching- so it is a safe site for you too. You will be very impressed I am sure.

As far as the Virginia group goes- I hope that all of you feel free to email each other, and bounce things off of each other etc. Share recipes- share events that may be going on, and also share any neat stores that you would recommend. This is a place to share whatever you think would be helpful to other people in this area.

I really would like to get some people together- looking at the different areas, I would suggest that you see who is near you and maybe contact them & get to know them (if you want to socialize and make new and exciting friends)! We are spread out all around VA.

I will try to check in more often- but please feel free to meet-greet-share and grown with your fellow Virginians.

Finally, the Holidays are upon us, and I am sure you are all getting crazy right now with your schedules. I hope that everyone has a safe-healthy- and happy Holiday season.

That is it for now- I will check in when I can. Happy Baking! Julie :)

Hi all, not sure this will post... I have had some challenges on here with technical problems.I want to wish everyone a very Happy Holiday, and may you all get what you want through these Holidays. Try to relax a little and take time for you in this very busy time.I will check in periodically and touch base when I can. Take care and Happy Baking!

I was living in Virginia for 3 years and I will be moving back to the area in March. I am a novice cake decorator, I've taken the Wilton courses. I will post pictures of my cakes as soon as I can. My decorating instructor wants me to enter a novice competition so if anyone has any information about some in the area I would love to try and mabey make some friends in the process!

Hello fellow cakers! I'm happy to say I'm a licensed baker in Henrico, Va if anyone knows of any competitions in the Delmarva areas after June I'd love to get involved! Completely self taught and happy to be creative with sugar!

Hi All, I am back home... I fell in January and broke both ankles and I have been in & out of hospitals since then. I missed checking in and saying hi to you all. I hope that everyone is doing well and you all had great holidays! So, what are you all planning for the summer?

Wondering from any of you licensed bakers here in N. Virginia how I could go about getting licensed? I really want to be legal since I feel more people are asking for cakes and can't afford to do it as favors! Thanks for your help in advance!

Hi Johana-welcome and nice to talk to you. I would start with calling the Virginia Agricultural dept. They have a packet that tells you everything you will need to know. I am in the Northern VA. area also. I am not licensed yet but was checking it out before my accident. I am kind of on hold until I can walk again.   ;(

My understanding is that you will need to fill out their forms, have an inspection from them and go from there. Some of the things that they will ask you for: your lay out of the house-bathroom, kitchen, hand washing sinks, refrigerator, etc. They want you to have your business supplies kept seperate from your families food. They want a 3 compartment sink, and like a seperate refrigerator also. Everything you make needs to have a label with ingredients, name and so on. You can not cater like hot foods or potentially hazardous foods from your home basically just bake. Cakes, cupcakes, cookies& that type of thing. There is a lot to know, and they want to keep the public safe so they can be strict.

I would start there and if you have questions after you get the packet, please ask and maybe I can help.

Good luck with this. Let me know how you make out. Julie

You don't need a 3 compartment sink, just 2 compartment or a dishwasher that sanitizes to 160 degrees F.

Thank you Julie and Kristin! I will try to see if I can get this all figured out and done. I don't even know where I would store my supplies that it wasn't with my families food =(. Time to reorganize, buy another fridge, and figure out this sink/dishwasher thing. Again, thanks ladies. Going to contact the dept. of Agriculture =)
