Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I received the photos of the cake with the Calla lilies and was so disappointed! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw how these "trained" bakers did the swag. The bouquets ends was just plastered onto the cake with a dollop of icing (I assume) and that was colored yellow. No finesse, no nothing. I am seriously considering not making flowers for them anymore. In the end it is my name that is associated with the cake, so I would rather have less work and good results than see my work on something like this. There was so much that could have been done with this cake.  What do you all suggest...I'd love to hear your comments.

Magdalena, I am so sad to read your post.  How bitterly disappointing for you to put so much effort in to something and then have a bunch of amateurs mess it up for you.  If you are not happy having your name associated with these people, then you have to have a serious discussion with them.  Tell them you are not happy with the quality of their work and either they step up or you back out.  You cannot allow yourself to be embarrassed by something that is associated with you.  I have felt like this in a job I had towards the end of my career.  I was an expert in my field (corporate travel management) and my last job was working in a company that I didn't really have much respect for with a bunch of people, most of whom were average to say the least and didn't give a toss about the client.  I was glad to be out of it frankly, as I felt they were damaging my reputation and I could do little about it.

I will be interested to hear what others say, and what your decision will be.  We are going away for a few days tomorrow and this is my last comment for a few days.  But I shall watch this discussion and read others comments when we get back

Sending love and hugs - keep you chin up!

xx

Thank you Katy, you are as always a bright star in my new found "career" and I'll always value your opinion. Enjoy your trip. Vacation? <3

i do agree with Katy ! sorry to see what the did to your beautiful work , i dont see how they can do a swag like that and not see its to hard and makes the cake look bad ! ; (

Bless Magdalena.  Yes, 'holiday' lol!  Few days in the sun in Spain. Back Saturday pm.  xxx

What WAS that swag made with... garden hose? wow! If I were the bride I'd have gone ballistic. Too bad to see your beautiful flowers stuck to that. Def dissapointing. It's like when people stick candles all over a sculpted cake then post the pics! (which is why I photograph all my bday cakes, then either place 1 candle for them or tell them where to put the candles now!)

I would talk with the owner of the bakery. Maybe suggest you hold a "tutorial" for their crew on decorating with sugar flowers? Although I think they need a fondant class too!

I agree with everyone, Magdalena.  You do wonderful work and to have someone else not respect that is a real shame.  Like Katy said, you need to have a talk with them and tell them to shape up or you will ship out!  Seriously, I had a similar problem one time in my previous career as a website developer.  My normal code writer was away and I hired someone to take over temporarily.  I met her through a course I was taking and as we were trained the same, assumed she had the same ethics.  She took my specifications and used 3 x the code (to use up the total budget on her) needed and produced very disappointing work, just like the bakers who attached your decorations.  Your work is amazing and really does need more TLC than they obviously give.

My sentiments exactly. I am always trying my best and I tried my first swag over and over until I thought it was perfect. I wouldn't even consider sending out a cake like that!

If this was me I too would be very diappointed in the way they represented my hard work.  The cake itself looks good but I agree these swags are a catastrophie. You could talk to them like Katy said but then you pose the possibility of really upsetting them also and if you are like me I hate confrontation. I do all my own cakes so do not know truly know how I would handle this but if it were me I would probably not do work for them anymore. I am a perfectionist so this would not be acceptable for me, I do not know if I could ever even have employees as I am just too picky with how my work is represented and the standard of my work.

Did you see the yellow line of color on the one lily? They made a mess when they tried to color the spathe a darker shade than mine, and did not even try to remove it! Aye! let me stop complaining. It was done and the purple roses will be the last order I do for them.

Thank you Laurie, I think you all helped me a lot tonight. I have to deliver the purple roses tomorrow, and I think I will tell them very politely to find someone else or buy their flowers at I Party like they used to do.
