hi jama:
a way to get that deep dark red color for gumpaste roses is to first color your gumpaste with red food coloring, when they are dry then use petal dust (you can order it from www.sugarcraft.com) petal dust is like a fine chalk it is food safe, u brush it on with a dry brush, then steam it over a boiling pot or put a mug in the microwave and use that steam. donot touch it once it is steamed or the color will come off, let it dry(the steam locks in the color). I usually use a little black petal dust along with the red to darken it and put a little black on the edge before steaming. hopes this help.
That is a fantastic site. It gave me exactly what I was looking for. I really appreciate your help!

hi jama,
you dont need to hold the flower over the stem for long, just a second, the stem will cover the flower very fast, i am assuming you are putting your flowers on wires, correct? if so, just hold the flower by the wire over the boiling water, then just put it in a styrofoam or a cup, whatever you are using to let them dry. you would do the same thing with the cup in the microwave, get it really hot so that it has steam and just hold the flower for a second over it, the flower will look shinny, like a little wet, then let it dry, this will lock in the colors, the same method can be used if you are using pearl, gold,or silver lusters.

Thanks Monica! I do have a question, do you just hold the flower over the boiling water and for how long? If I use a microwave, do I just lay the flower on a paper towel or in a flower cup/mold? And again, for how long in the microwave? I'm concerned that the steam will make my flower "wilt" or lose shape.
