Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hullooo all, its me again - I have a wedding cake to do for next Saturday and the fondant has to be purple!  Past experience has taught me that purple gel makes for a bitter taste because one has to add so much to make the colour real - any suggestions on how to overcome this?  Or better product to use?  Thanking you kindly :-)

I don't know if you would be open to using already made fondant, but Duff's has fondant in various color, and I'm pretty sure they have purple. I know Michael's carries it and you can use the 40 % off coupon for one item (Michael's also honors coupons from A.C. Moore as long as the coupon is just for a single item).

Good luck and can't wait to see pictures when its done.

if you can buy some satin ice fondant ,or use a strong colorless flavoring !

What a shame it isn't buttercream - you could use berries to get the colour & it would taste delicious.
I would buy it ready tinted, or buy Regalice in Berry red - which tastes of berries and I'd add blue until I got the desired colour.
Looking forward to seeing your creation. Tx

How about covering it in white fondant and then air brush it purple? If you have an air brush kit that is! :)

Mandy you can certainly buy purple fondant over here - M&B Luxury Amethyst Purple sugarpaste is a lovely colour, don't know if you can get that in SA.

I've used Duff's and everyone loves the taste.  If there is a liquid in your recipe I would think you could replace it with the juice of blueberries.  Might not make purple but it should require less color

yes , thats sounds good Katy and Sandra ,  also if she mix's her fondant with dark blue and red chocolate , she should be able to take away the taste of any amount of gel's she needs to use !

wow, this question is right up my alley, i just went through the "purple" fondant stage, what i did was to make lavendar moldeling chocolate, add in a lil  dark modeling chocolate,  it did great as a purple, it holds it color and taste awesome, another thing you can do is purchase a non-fading purple color gel from Chef Master, its a little more pricer than your average icing color but it doesnt fade so it is worth it.

I just used the non fade lavender and it doesn't make a nice purple you will have to add other color, red or blue depending on what your looking for.  It makes a nice lavender/violet but to get a purple it needs help.  You could add a little navy blue.  I made navy for a baseball hat and the navoy blue food color actually has a purple cast.  I tried black but it has green in it so don't go there, but the navy food coloring from Americorlor worked well and didn't make it taste bad.  Americolor has a regal purple in the sft get coloring.

Good luck, I went through this with the navy blue

Monica - I knew someone had had this issue just recently and couldn't remember who it was!

You can use violet or regal purple and add a bit of pink.

I think Gail touched on both these points but I thought I would reiterate because I have tried this already.

Satin Ice Purple fondant is a very nice shade and great to work with.  To get the shade I needed, I added a little white Satin Ice and got the perfect shade.

For taste, you can add some extract.  I used colourless vanilla - just a touch.
