Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

hi every1. Ive been asked by a relative if i could make a harley davidson cake for her grandson.  I told her, with being a beginner, i don't think i could do a 3d cake, as i don't have any books with a bike in it.  Can any1 help me out here, or guide me to a tutorial.  I thought about doing a 2d bike on a sponge cake

Hi amanda:

i cannot walk you through the process of creating a 3d motor bike, but i have found a short tutorial on Flickr that may help you.  It is very visual and prehaps you can get some pointers.  Go to Flickr and look for RDPJ Cakes, under his photo stream you will see a red motorcycle, and you can see hime build it step by step. Hope this helps.

another option is making a bike out of modeling chocolate or fondant/gumpaste for the top. i have one in my photos if you want to take a look.

for an actual cake you need to make a platform to hold the cake up above the board. use PVC pipes covered in modeling chocolate to make the forks and swing arm to hold the tires and have them secured to the underside of the platform. build the cake up on that and carve it to make the rough engine, seat, tailpipe and tank shapes. cover it all in fondant and detail it. make the handle bars, headlight, and wheels separately from cereal treats and modeling chocolate and/or gum paste. kind of simplified, but that's the general idea and how i'd do it. it will take lots of planning and measuring and some time at home depot, but it would be a great learning experience. just leave yourself enough time!

if you need more help, send me a message and i'll do what i can. good luck!

This what to search for right here on cakeswebake ( how to make an Amazing harley davidson cake.wmv  )

it is a great video on making a Harley cake.

best of luck & dont forget to post pictures

I just made a Harley cake this week. I made a 2-tier white on bottom, black on top. I did the Harley symbol/logo on the top tier and they put a mini Harley Motorcycle on top. Just a thought :)

Hi Amanda - I've never made a motorcycle cake and I would be apprehensive too.  If you are not sure you can do this, how about suggesting an alternative?  Perhaps you could make a cake in the shape of a Harley petrol tank and give it some really wild painting effects.  A 3D tank would be easy to do and the painting would be fun.  Depending on the character of the recipient, you could add a phrase to it like - 'ride it like you stole it', or 'Born to be Wild'.  A Harley tank badge is quite straightforward as well, so you could make that out of gumpaste and stick it onto the cake.  btw the reason I know a lot about Harley's is my husband used to ride one - we deviated from Triumphs for just a short while.  Anyways, just an idea, good luck with whatever you decide to do and don't forget to post the pics!

You could also make a sheet cake and make a road and then make the Harley out of Rice Krispy Treats and then cover it in fondant or candy clay.

thanx every1 for your great suggestions.  If the cake was for 2 weeks time, i could try to manage making it, but the cake is for saturday morning and i only have thursday and friday evening to work on it, as have a day job.  So i've been having a good look on line and thought i could make the cake a 9 inch round and make it look like a tyre and put an edible topper of a photo of a harley and round the sides of the cake have flames on the tyre.  What do you all think?

Hey
On such short notice Amanda, that sounds pretty good to me.
:o)

Yep - I think that's a great idea Amanda.  With such little time, you would only end up stressing and probably messing up if you try anything more complicated.  They'll be lucky to get this I think!  Go for it and don't forget to post pics!

thanx everyone.  Did the 1st stage tonight.  I printed out the edible topper.  This is only my 3rd time using my edible printer.  So i'm pleased so far.  Will start making the cake 2moro night :D
