Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I'm curious, I see posts about people making and selling cakes, but I have a question.

when I got married the woman that made our cake worked out of her home. She had a separate kitchen set up because it was a legal requirement.

So those of you that sell cakes have a separate kitchen in your home for this?

I imagine that laws vary from state to state, but what are the legal minimums that you had to follow?

thanks!

You have to look at the regulations and requirements within your State.  Where I live you have to obtain a license to sell from home, and go through inspection.  The Health Department will tell you if you will be able to do that.  The State of Maryland does require that you do not sell products from home, but you can sell them at craft or flea market just as long as you have the company name, address, and telephone numbers on the labels of your product.  Although I know quite  few people sell from their home although they have a license, including myself.  One of the most famous cake bakers from Baltimore started his cake business from home and that the "Ace of Cakes", Mr. Goldblum.  Now he is famous.  He was selling his cakes for three years from his home.

Every state and county have different rules. Our county does not required an inspected kitchen and you can't have a second kitchen in the home but you must label them and can not sell cakes that have to be refridgerated. In the next county, you can not sell out of your house at all. And try to find a.county worker who understands the rules. Fun fun

....and there are the Cottage Food Laws....you can sell at Farmers Markets.....it's enough to make your head spin!

well I'll be darned. I always said there was something to following your gut instincts.

I've always been told I'm a great baker, but just a few weeks ago I was having dreams with my grandmother telling me that now was the time to start learning to decorate cakes as I've always wanted to do.

so I did.

from what I have seen so far, looks like earlier this year my state adopted the cottage food laws. so from what I understand, cakes and things can be made in the home.

thank you so much for giving me this info, If I want to start selling cakes, just may be easier than I thought! I'm out the door right now, But I'll take a look at the info tomorrow!

thanks again!!!!!!

Good luck!!

Glad we were able to help.  Happy baking!!!

anyone know how you find out how you can be certified in safe food handling and processing? from what I understand you have to be, and I'm getting no where in google...........

If your state requires it maybe local votec offers classes or a culinary academy?
I decided to check because I would like to be cerrified. There are online classes offered. http://www.statefoodsafety.com/

I'm a ways away from being ready for anything like that, but thanks for telling me! I'm taking things step by step, I'll check into the certification. :) it's a big city, I'm sure there's something around here.

thanks!
