Beverly - Thanks for inspiring me! I just set up a graduation cake for someone who could use the help. I want to enter the grad cake contest, but don't have any cakes scheduled. So, I contacted one of my friends who works at an inner city school and asked if she had a deserving student who might not be able to get a cake. She knew exactly the person. I will be making her a cake pro bono for this upcoming weekend. I'm excited to help someone, and it's a bonus for me - I can enter the contest.

Hi, i am in Elyria .... have only been here for a year, from Tucson AZ
self taught, grandma was a professional decorator and so was my mom. Just picked it up from them. Trying to find the tricks of cake decorating in humidity =-) New at working with fondant and gumpaste. Glad to have found this website.

Welcome, Colleen and Jenni!

Colleen, humidity is something that we struggle with here in Ohio. Making icing on a humid day is a real challenge. All I can say is, crank up the AC on those humid days! When I'm making icing on a humid day, I don't add any liquid until the end. I mix up my fats (butter and shortening) and sugar first and then I add any liquid. Sometimes the liquid is not neccessary. I used to work in a cookie store and last summer we moved into a house that was built in 1865...it had a dirt floor in the basement...our icing was never the same. We struggled with it on a daily basis.

I don't use a cooked icing on hot humid day as it will slide right off the cake. Otherwise I use extra meringue powder in my butter cream. (pray a lot. :)

Hi, I'm a newbie cake baker, having fun experimenting with new recipes for cakes and icings.  Anybody willing to share any tried and true recipes I would truly appreciate the your kindness. I live in Eastlake, Ohio and am very happy to be a part of this group.

Hi I am Kellie from Cincinnati, OH. I just joined this community about a month ago and have found it very helpful.  I have been decorating cakes for a little over a year now.  I must say that once you get hooked there is no turning back.

Hello, I am Jackie from the Blanchester/Lynchburg area. It's about an hour east of Cincinnati. I have been decorating cakes for almost a year now. It's just something I decided to try one day and was immediately hooked. I haven't taken any classes, although I plan on it after the holidays. I'm comfortable with fondant and gumpaste, but I struggle with the buttercream. I am also happy to be a part of this group :)
