Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I just wanted to share my excitment with all of you uk based cakers.

I've been baking from a new recipe book and it's wonderful.  It's called "the hummingbird bakery cookbook", And I can't wait to visit them in Portabello rd in London.

Has anyone else visited them?

Yes I have that book aswell, it fantastic isn't it?!! The recipes are so modern, fresh and tasty! It's my favourite book. What have you made from it so far?
Hi Tracy, I've made most of the cupcakes, they are so yummy. You need a spoon to eat the strawberry cheesecake ones. I haven't tried the cakes yet though, have you? .... oh and I thought you might like to know there is a mistake in the banana and chocolate cupcake recipe..... it's a teaspoon and NOT a tablespoon of baking powder!!!!!
Keep baking
Hi Ann, I've not made a lot so far, the vanilla cupcakes, I think I made the banana and chocolate cupcakes?!, marshmallow cupcakes, nutty apple loaf (wasn't good!), chocolate muffins and chocolate chip cookies. I suppose I have made quite a bit when I write it down. Haven't made any large cakes yet though, I think I will choose a new recipe this bank holiday weekend.
Hi Tracy
Now I did say I was raving about this book, but have changed nearly every recipe I've made!!!!! I 'm really fussy about how clean my cupcakes leave the papper, as this wasn't happening with the vanilla and chocolate ones I've changed the 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder to just 1 teaspoon.
But I do still think the American style of cupcake is so much nicer then our fairy cake mix we all grew up with , so much lighter, my clients love them. it's here to stay.

I've had this book on my wishlist forever but haven't got around to getting it yet. With three of the four children's birthdays all clumped around christmas and a niece and then the move I've had to be good and not splurge too much on books! Tesco Clubcard vouchers treated me to the Primrose Bakery one a few weeks ago though and I'm hoping to get time to try that out soon.
Lovely book and lovely recipes - I particularly liked the Hummingbird one itself (although this cake has been around for a long time) and made some test cakes that were wolfed down in seconds... yummy
This weekend I visited the hummingbird bakery in Portobello rd in London...........wow loved the ambiance, we have nothing back home like this!
I didn't try all the cupcakes!!!!!!!! that would have been silly. I bought a red velvet and a carrot cupcake
And they were lovely but for my taste too much icing!!!!!!! I'd say the ratio was 1/3 icing to 2/3 cake
I suppose it is a matter of taste but I prefer 1/4 icing to 3/4 cake
And I couldn't tase any vanilla in the red velvet:(
